    3. Hi Carol Lee, You may want to try looking at Greenfield Cemetery, Wellington County, Peel Township. I lived in Arthur for many, many years and that is the only cemetery that I know of in the immediate area. There are a couple of other REALLY SMALL ones just on the outskirts of the village, and one in Damascus (which is a 5-10 minute drive), but they have a few people buried in each. Try looking on the OCFA website for her using her last name (and given if you know it) with Wellington County and Peel Township fields filled in. Good luck, Kim > From: "Radford" <radford2@bellsouth.net> > To: <CA-ONT-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 10:06 PM > Subject: [ON-CEM] Can anyone tell me where > > > > Hello List, > > > > In my ggrandfather's obit, it mentions that his > mother left Smiths Falls, > > Ontario in 1850 as a widow, and moved to Burwell > Line, Peel, three miles > > from Arthur, Ontario. 3. Hello and happy belated New Year! I want to take this opportunity to thank Sheila Hill for doing all she does for our Ontario Cemeteries... and for her great friendship in the many endeavours she's working on :) Keep up the good work! An update has been completed to "Gateway to Ontario Cemeteries Resources". Please note that this is now online in two locations - one being on rootsweb at http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~silentguardians and the other now located at http://www.wightman.ca/~dkaufman. Why two locations? Many of us often find rootsweb pop-ups and the servers being down from time to time, a bit of an annoyance. We will keep both locations updated as we can. In case you don't know about this website, Sheila has created a contact list of volunteers in Ontario who are willing to find information for researchers. Please note that some volunteers have left - plllleeeeeeaaaaassssssseeeeee praise your volunteer and offer many thanks! On another note, there have been some who would like to volunteer, but haven't offered all information. If you would like to be added to the volunteer list, please get in touch with Sheila or myself with the following information: County, Township, Cemetery Name(s), your name & contact email, and what you're willing to do (transcriptions, photos, etc.). Without all this information, your posting may be misplaced... which is why I try not to post until all information is available. I truly apologize if this inconveniences anyone, and hope you'll understand :) On a side note, I am participating in this year's Super Cities Walk for MS - trying to raise funds for a cure. If you would like to pledge me (my goal is $5,000), please contact me directly or use the link below to pledge online. Any donation over $15 will receive a tax receipt. All donations received through the obits website will be put towards this MS fundraising goal. With much gratitude ... 3. A huge THANK YOU to all of you who sent suggestions, hints, ideas - and even an email copy of the lead story - about opening this link. I still haven't conquered the problem, but I am determined that I WILL do it! I have relatives buried in McColl Cemetery, and have found it to be a lovely, peaceful place, well maintained and a pleasure to visit. One of the things that I was hoping to find on Christine's suggested site for McColl Cemetery is if there is a transcription of the actual burial records, rather than of the stones themselves. My relative's stone has a death date for her husband, but not for her. I am pretty sure that she died after he did, and they had no children, so a death date was never added to her stone. Without a death date, I can't find an obituary or a death cert... and so it goes. Suggestions gladly received... Again, thank you! You're a neat bunch! 3. Hi Carol, I copied this from a website after googling, note though that #9 from Arthur to Teviotdale is 109 now. If she is buried in that area then it would be Wellington County not Peel. Part of Luther township and parts of Arthur township were surveyed by Lewis Burwell and for many years #9 Highway from Arthur towards Teviotdale was known as the Burwell Line. 3. Hello List, In my ggrandfather's obit, it mentions that his mother left Smiths Falls, Ontario in 1850 as a widow, and moved to Burwell Line, Peel, three miles from Arthur, Ontario. She was 70 in the 1871 census and does not appear in the 1881. So, could someone tell me what cemeteries in the 1871-1881 time frame were in that "Burwell Line, Peel Township area? They were a catholic family but I am looking at all cemeteries I certainly would appreciate any thoughts. Carol Lee

    3. Hi List; I have really only visited cemeteries in my area where my ancestors are buried - Stayner, Collingwood, Barrie , Brentwood and the Pioneer Catholic Cemetery on the 4th Line of Nottawasaga. This pioneer cemetery only has a few stones placed at the front of it and nobody really looks after it. I have volunteered on RAOCK to take pictures of tombstones at St. Patrick's Catholic cemetery on Highway 91, just outside of Stayner. I have also started to transcribe birth, marriage and death records from the census to go on line , mainly for Nottawasaga and surrounding areas. Hope this site continues to grow! Shirley Cook

    3. Hi, Pamela and listers, Pamela, in what part of Michigan do you live? I'm trying to trace a great-uncle, Samuel C. RO(D)GERS, who lived in Bay City, MI, in 1897. He was born about 1853 in Northumberland Co., Ontario. He died before July, 1932, probably in Michigan but I have no proof of that. I tried the Bay City library but got no response. Unfortunately, I have no further information about Samuel ROGERS. If you (or any listers) have suggestions for my further research in the USA I would appreciate it. Pamela, where in Ontario did your BRADLEYs live? I have BRADLEY ancestors (and living relatives) in North Easthope, Perth Co., Ontario. Thanks for your input. Cheers! I have visited many cemeteries in my area, though, and thoroughly enjoy it. I have a transcript of the Bervie Anglican Cemetery, in Bervie, Bruce Co., if anyone needs a lookup. Have been from Hanover and area, to Pickering, to Bracebridge and on through to Bridgenorth. Small distance probably compared to some of you, but great fun. AND YOU? 3. due to some confusion I restate my last listing I frequent St. Joseph's Cemetery in Brantford three seasons of the year...I do not think that records were microfilmed but the Catholic Cemeteries of Hamilton Diocese have some records but not a lot from before 1950...I can take pictures of markers anytime but winter ...but it would help if you know the location ...it is quite large...to the best of my knowledge no one has ever transcribed the names of the stones for the internet. and not all graves are marked (especially some of the older graves from the depression years) requests for photo's should be sent to walkswithsnow@yahoo.ca with subject Grave photos (with current date in Brackets) RPS May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord cause his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and grant you peace.

    3. Dear Listers: I encourage everyone who wants to obtain transcriptions for any cemetery in Ontario to purchase them though their branch of the OGS. Though the wonderful cooperation of several branches of the OGS they have made it possible for lookups and records to be made available though our "sister" webpage...Gateway to Ontario Cemeteries http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~silentguardians ( lookups and links) I encourage everyone to support their local branch of the OGS. Members of the each branch of the OGS volunteer their time to make it possible for everyone to seek out information on nearly every know cemetery in Ontario for a very fair price. Also stay tune for a very important announcement in regards to our "sister" webpage Gateway to Ontario Cemeteries for a new name and web server. A special thank-you to Janet Jones who again has worked hours to make the webpages up to date. For those new to this list we also have another webpage called "Field of Stones" which main focus in on pioneer and abandoned cemeteries in Ontario. We also seek photos of any cemeteries not ALREADY available on line. We have supplied links to most known cemeteries with photos as a part of our website too. Field of Stones can be found at. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~clifford/index.htm ( photos) And lastly, for those who need information on Obits, I like to point you to a wonderful site which has more than 170,000 Ontario obits ( growing) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~janjones/ (view obits online) The above site is done by Janet Jones. 3. Good evening cemetery listers every-where ... Our List Administrator Sheila is very grateful for our support. In a private communication with me, she has asked me to do a couple of things to create some new topics of interest for us to discuss ... One of the questions that Sheila asked of me was: "How many cemeteries have you been to and could I name them and give their location." Well Sheila and fellow listers, after I stopped laughing, with tears running down my face, I called my Mom Audrey into my office and she too went into quite a giggle fit ... Ok, long story made sort of short ... one of my first genealogical pilgrimages was in the fall of 1966 to try and locate the grave of my mother's paternal grandmother in Prospect cemetery, here in Toronto - and the rest they say is history ... I should mention that I have ancestors (ANCESTORS, not relatives)buried in the counties of Lanark, Ontario, York, Halton, Peel, Wentworth, Wellington, Grey, Bruce, Lincoln and Lambton) as well as in the provinces of New Brunswick, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, and the states of New Jersey, Missouri, Michigan - so my connections, and hence interests, are wide and varied. As to the actual number of cemeteries that I have been "in" (above and below ground I might add!!!! but hey those are stories for another day)- that number is incalculable, and it is certainly in thousands ... I know that one of my best friends (Bill Patton) and I went to 25 different cemeteries in one day in the Halton - Peel - Hamilton - Niagara area a number of years back. We kept a record ... Started at about 7:00 a.m., and was home after midnight. Bill Patton and I, along with my mother Audrey Gilchrist, and family friend Brenda Cook are founding and honorary members of a very exclusive and select genealogical group called "The Crypt Crawlers Association of Canada" (CCAC, for short, and it is not connected with the wonderful nursing assistance programme Community Care Access). Membership is predicated on you having been at least eight feet underground in a cemetery in a family owned vault - in other words in an under ground crypt! Conservatively there are about 4,500 burial grounds known to exist in Ontario and I would dare assert that I have been in over 2,000 or more of them over the past 38 years that I have been doing research. I have been in cemeteries from Windsor to Glengarry, up through North Bay and Sudbury, and as far north as Thunder Bay. As to the number of transcripts that I have, again I have no idea but a ball park estimate might be around 400 different transcriptions - So, enough about me... can I now pose a question for the list? Have any of you been in more than 25 cemeteries in one day? Cheers! J. Brian Gilchrist Etobicoke

You can also do a google search for McColl Cemetery Story and click the "cached" link there. Unfortunately, you won't see the picture on the front page. Also, if you want to access any of the links at the bottom of the page, you would need to copy the name of the link, add those words to the search term (example: "mccoll cemetery story To Headstone Index " and click to search google again. Remember to click on the word "cached" when the results come up. This is a pain, but at least it's a way to read it. Good luck.
