Thankyou Brian and all volunteers for all you do in the aid of others. Thankyou for writing to us about the origin and meaning of our Thanksgiving. Each of us should give thanks each day for being afforded the opportunity to do research on our own family history, as some folks cannot even get out of their beds. We take far too much for granted in this life. Enjoy each day, and remember to help someone along the way. So often we forget all the wonderful people who volunteer their time to do lookups not only on this list' but also on our Gateway to Ontario Cemeteries website. If by chance you have had one of our wonderful volunteer do a lookups for you, I trust you have found time to send back a big Thank-you . Each person who has ever been involved in Genealogy has been at one time or another, has been helped by someone. Imagine how long and hard the road to find our family ancestors' would be, if no one stopped to assist you on the way. The world of genealogy is not a path taken alone, but rather by all the people you meet on the way sharing the same dream......... of knowing their "roots". Have you said "Thank-you" today for a random act of kindness? Sheila
Good morning from Toronto: Dora from Michigan has asked the origins of the Canadian Thanksgiving. The Canadian Thanksgiving, like your counterpart in the United States in November, has developed out of an ancient tradition of thanking God and being grateful for all that we have in our lives. You might see that the history buff in me comes out in the next few paragraphs! The act of "THANKS - giving" can occur for any reason. Religious services of Thanksgiving were often held after victory (or defeat!) in Battle, after recovery from a illness, when a child was born, when some one died (the Thanks being for the good life that the person had lived), etc. Octoberfest in Germany is form of the celebration! In fact many cemeteries have annual an annual Memorial Day ceremony - which is also a form of a service of thanksgiving. One of the first North American Thanksgiving services was held in the year 1578 - almost 40 years before the Pilgrim Fathers had their service in Massachusetts. In what was then the British colony of Newfoundland (the New Found Land!) Explorer Martin Frobisher (who was on a voyage to discover a North West Passage to China) had a feast of thanksgiving to be grateful for the safe crossing of the oceans. The timing of the festival known as "Thanksgiving" has evolved into a pattern of being celebrated when the harvest was, for the most part, complete for the year - the grain was stored, the vegetables were stored, and even some of the preserves had been made. The provisions were in place to allow the family to survive and function to a minimum level during the frigid winter months ahead. Remember these provisions were required as you had to feed the cow or goat all winter to get any milk that you needed for not only cooking and baking but also making butter. There were no canned goods, no boxes of cereal, no gasoline, no electricity (hence no refrigeration except in the "root cellars" or "cold rooms", or in nearby creek or lake waters), no refined oil. Most of today's generations have no comprehension of how to store food for months at a time. Some of the food storage problems were the reasons there were so many deaths. Simply put - the food our ancestors ate was not the best by today's standards and in many cases food (and unclean water) did kill them. I find it interesting that most of our ancestors never had a picture taken of them while they lived. Many of our ancestors never even knew what they themselves looked like - as not everyone owned a mirror and many did not even have any glass (to see their reflection in) in the windows of their home or barns. So when we stand before the graves and memorials of our ancestors and sundry relations with our cameras strung around our necks - remember that these people did live in a totally different time. Therefore when visiting the family graves and memorials it is perfectly fine and honourable to get down on your knees, or bow your head, and offer a private and personal "thanks-giving" to their memory. After all, if it was not for our ancestors - we would not be here. Cheers! J. Thank you Brian. You have always given us so much help. Your words of thankfulness (sp?) for our ancestors really makes me think of what they went through. In transcribing death registrations, people died of what we would consider very minor illnesses. During the WW1, my grandfather managed to live through scarlet fever. This was only found out through his war records, and a family story was proved incorrect. I am thankful that my grandfather lived through scarlet fever, was returned to his family. My father was an only child. I love him and I am thankful for my family. I dropped in on Rockwood cemetery last week. It is on Hwy-7 halfway between Georgetown and Guelph.ont. (south side) The pioneer section was in the very back and was a group of stones all cemented into a cairn. I took Photos, and will sent them to our 'field-of-stones' lady this week The rest of the cemetery was about ten acres and only half finished, AND UNIQUELY, was a bulletin board in the middle govered with glass and fify printout pages of all the internments.
Hi everyone! How many people on this list have a map of a cemetery? If you do, would you please contact me. A large number of photos have been received and will be added shortly to "Field of Stones" website. Thanks to all who have taken the time to send the photos. Does anyone on this list have a small family cemetery located on their property? Years ago it was common for people to buried their family members on their farms. It would be nice to know that some of these cemeteries have not be forgotten and still exist Sheila shill@wightman.ca Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.!

Hello Listers, I'm new to this list and hope to find some information on the following relatives, who had lived in Hagersville area, and may be buried in Simcoe. Cornelius (Neil) REID married Sybil SMITH . Both were from England, Sybil (my great aunt) having been born in Northamptonshire in about 1885. I have no records on Neil's date or place of birth. According to a relative, they had several children, including Nellie, Leonard and Sybil. A relative also said that they are probably buried in Simcoe and that Neil was about 103 yrs.old. Would anyone be able to provide information as to the names of cemeteries in the Simcoe and Hagersville areas, as well as the administators' names? I apologise for the sketchy information, but it's all I have! Ross Cox, born Brantford, Ont.
Hi Carol I have checked the book "Those our Ancestors Were" which was done in 1976 and don't see them in there. There are a lot of errors in this book though. There are several cemeteries in the Bracebridge area. Bracebridge is Muskoka District and in Monck township or McCauley township depending just what area of Bracebridge your looking at.
