Sherman Passes Away Wednesday At Berkeley A Well Known Resident And Former Business Man At Martinez, Contra Costa County Article Text: The news of the death of George A. SHERMAN at Berkeley on Wednesday night was a shock to a great number of his old friends at Martinez though it was known that his health had been but poor for a long while. George Atwood SHERMAN, the son of Charles and Roxana SHERMAN was born in Deleware County, Ohio February 17, 1845. There he received his education and resided until 1863, when he accompanied his parents to California, and resided in El Dorado County until 1865, in the Spring of which years the family moved to Contra Costa county and George SHERMAN finished his education at the Platt School in Benecia. In July 1870, he embarked in the hotel business in the old Morgan House in Martinez in which he continued until July 1876 when he removed to Oakland. In December of that year he bought from D.A> LAURENCE the drug business in Martinez, which at the present time is under the direction of Mr. MARTIN and with that he combined the agency of Wells Fargo and Company. For more than 20 years Mr. SHERMAN conducted the business and was well liked by everyone. Later on he went to Berkeley and engaged in the same business until he was taken sick, after which he went up to Mendocino county where he spent two years. Thence he returned and for a time was in San Mateo county, where he had a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. He was brought back to Berkeley and there he has lived for the past three of four years. The remains of the deceased will be interred in the Alhambra Cemetery in the SHERMAN plot, and the funeral will be under the auspices of the Martinez Lodge F. & A.M. of which the deceased was a member. The funerla will be at the arrival of the 11:15 train. The wife of the deceased and two children survive to mourn his loss, also a sister, weel know here, Mrs. TAYLOR. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
