The funeral services were conducted at the dwelling of the parents by Rev. Mr. NICHOLSON. ATTENION! Stockton Union Guard, C.S.M. -- Assemble at your Armory, in full uniform, on Sunday, May 27th, at 2 o'clock p.m., to attend the Funeral of your late comrade, Lieutenant L.H. BLAISDELL. By order, L.E. LYON, Capt. Com'dg. DROWNED -- Jerome MYERS, Chief of Police, informs us that on Thursday evening last, 2 men -- one named Krofman STRAUSS, and the other a native of Poland -- were drowned while ferrying sheep across a slough between Durham's Ferry, on the San Joaquin, and Capt. McMULLIN's ranch, about 18 miles below this city. It appears that the Polander, who is Capt. DURHAM's ferry-man, was assisting STRAUSS to move some sheep, belonging to the latter and another man, across the slough, when the ferry-boat lurched to one side. STRAUSS called to the other man to catch the rope, when both jumped and took hold of it, and both were drowned in consequence of the rope not being tight enough to prevent their weight from sinking it deep in the water. Only 1 sheep was drowned, the boat keeping afloat but far enough under the water so that the animals were nearly half covered. At last accounts the bodies of the drowned men had not been recovered; but parties were continuing the search and were confide! nt that the remains of the unfortunate men could not be carried away in consequence of the peculiar formation of the slough at that point. Had both men remained on the ferry-boat instead of jumping and taking hold of the rope, they would not have lost their lives. PAINFUL ACCIDENT -- On Monday last, Mr. WARNER, a farmer who resides about 3 miles north of the Calaveras river, on the Cherokee Lane, unfortunately got his arm broken while leading a refractory horse to water. BY STATE TELEGRPH, San Francisco, May 25 -- William G. ROSS, who was shot by Charley DUANE, expired about half-past one o'clock this afternoon. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
