The particulars of the affair, as far as are yet known to us, were given by Mr. MOSS, driver of the Sonora stage, on Friday last, and published in Saturday evening's 'Herald' as follows: "A terrible affair was witnessed at Knights Ferry on Friday forenoon, which terminated in the killing of 2 men, Mr. McGINNIS and George F. CHESHIRE. CHESHIRE was a school teacher and turned a daughter of McGINNIS, aged 17 years, out of his school. For this, McGINNIS sent the teacher word he would horsewhip him. On Friday forenoon McGINNIS attacked CHESHIRE, when the teacher succeeded in getting him down 2 or 3 times, the last time telling McGINNIS if he again attacked him he would shoot him. McGINNIS again approached CHESHIRE, when the teacher shot 4 balls from a revolver into the body of McGINNIS, killing him on the spot. This was in the presence of the school children. A son of McGINNIS soon after shot the teacher, the ball entering the head of Mr. CHESHIRE a little above the right ear, passing through the brain, and striking the skull on the opposite side so as to make it bulge out. The ball then glanced down to the lower portion of the brain, the probe failing to reach i! t. Mr. MOSS, the driver of the Sonora stage, when passing through Knights Ferry on Friday, says CHESHIRE was still living, although, of course, with no chance for his recovery." [see next issue] ------------------------------------------------------------ IMPROVEMENTS at ROUGH and READY -- Mr. CROZIER, proprietor of the Rough and Ready ranch, situated on the west side of the San Joaquin river, at the junction of that stream and Stockton slough, is erecting a new engine to raise water for irrigating his orchard and garden. Heretofore the water needed has been raised from the river by a small steam engine; but lately, having enlarged the area of cultivated ground, a more powerful machine is needed to supply the required amount of water for the trees and vegetables during the coming Summer. PAINFUL ACCIDENT -- The Woodbridge 'Messenger,' of Saturday, says that on Wednesday last a little daughter of Mr. SHAW, residing near Liberty, whilst playing on a hay stack, fell and broke her left arm above the elbow. A surgeon residing at Woodbridge set the arm and relieved the little sufferer as much as it was possible for surgical skill to do. >>TUESDAY, 19 FEB 1867>WEDNESDAY, 20 FEB 1867San Francisco papers please copy.] [We acknowledge the receipt of a bountiful supply of bride's cake and wine, and all hands in the 'Independent' office join in wishing the happy couple prosperity and happiness.] DEATH -- in this city, Feb. 19th, of diphtheria, Edwin, son of Louis and Mary A. RICHARDS, formerly of Washington Flat, Calaveras county, returned to this city yesterday, direct from Idaho, where he has been engaged in business during the past 3 years and a half. He leaves for Calaveras this morning. Mr. RICHARDS is pleased with the Boise country and proposes to return in a month or 2, having only come to California on a temporary visit. His parents reside in Calaveras. BY STATE TELEGRAPH, San Francisco, Feb. 19 -- William AHERAN, a discharged soldier, attempted to commit suicide this morning at the corner of Pacific and Battery streets. He appeared dejected in spirits this morning, but not sufficiently so as to excite the apprehensions of his friends. About 11 o'clock someone in the house where he was stopping went to his room and found the unfortunate man lying on the floor in a pool of blood, with his throat cut from ear to ear; while a bloody razor, lying near his hand, showed how the wound was inflicted. When discovered he was almost insensible and utterly helpless from loss of blood. While the doctor was sewing his wounds, AHERAN spoke to him with difficulty and said: "I have been robbed of all my money by gamblers and don't want to live any longer." After his wounds were dressed he was sent to the county hospital, where he now lies with but little prospect of recovery. He is supposed to have had considerable money. MARYSVILLE, Feb. 19 -- The dead body of Charles McDUFF, a peddler, was found this morning under his wagon, on the road leading from this city to Nevada. He was about 40 years age and a native of Canada. He leaves a wife & 5 children. >>THURSDAY, 21 FEB 1867>FRIDAY, 22 FEB 1867

SHOAFF, of the 'Union Vedette' newspaper, Salt Lake, is in poor health, and that he is attended constantly by physicians. FATAL ACCIDENT -- Drytown, Jan. 6 -- While attempting to cross Indian Creek, at Finn's Ranch, near this place [Drytown], last night about dark, the buggy of J.B.K. CHURCH was overturned by the force of the current and his wife and little son, about 3 years old, were drowned. Mr. CHURCH, although considerably injured, succeeded in gaining the shore, but could render no assistance to his wife and child. The body of Mrs. CHURCH was found this morning about half a mile below Finn's, and that of the child about 4 miles below, near Mineral City. MARRIED AGAIN -- LYNCH, of the Gold Hill 'News,' says that Brigham YOUNG is luxuriating in the honeymoon of his 45th wife, a beautiful Danish girl of 17. He has just lost his 24th wife, who was buried without any ceremony, or even a notice of her death. -------------------------------------------------------- DEATH of WILSON FLINT -- Our exchanges bring us the sorrowful intelligence of the death of Hon. Wilson FLINT, of Sacramento -- a gentleman who has perhaps done more, by his pen and by his individual influence and example, to advocate the agricultural interests of California than any other citizen of the State. Mr. FLINT died at San Francisco on the 4th inst., of congestive chills. The 'Bulletin' of the same date furnished the following sketch of the deceased. We are necessarily compelled to abbreviate it somewhat: Wilson FLINT was born in New Hampshire in 1825. In 1842 he went from New York, where he had engaged in mercantile pursuits, to Galveston, Texas. While in Texas, his reflective and sagacious mind became strongly convinced of the moral and economical evil of slavery, and he left that State in 1849, as he told the writer of this, because he was unwilling to have his children grow up under its vicious influence, and did not feel at home under it himself. He believed, moreover; that the struggle for its extension and perpetuation would result in civil war. Mr. FLINT made his first home in our State at San Francisco, where he built the large warehouse which still stands at North Point, and was very prosperous until the overdoing of the warehouse business caused a sudden reaction that involved him in heavy losses. In 1856, he was elected to the State Senate from this county on the American or Know Nothings mainly because he thought their organization could be used to break down the! pro-slavery Democratic influence which then ruled the State. During his term, Henry S. FOOTE, late Confederate Senator, who had just come to California on a political venture from Mississippi, was the Know Nothing candidate for United States Senator. Mr. FLINT, together with ASHLEY, of Monterey, (now Congressman from Nevada), and WAITE, of Nevada county, and perhaps 1 or 2 others, concluded that FOOTE was an unfit man, who, if elected, would serve the slavery aggressionists. He was the caucus nominee, however, and could only be defeated by preventing a joint convention. It was found that a single vote would suffice to prevent a convention, and Mr. FLINT cast that vote day after day. The service he did the State by defeating FOOTE can be estimated now when we reflect that had FOOTE been elected he would have been representing California during the exciting session of Congress which preceded the rebellion, and until the 2nd year of the war, and would doubtless have ranked hi! mself among the opponents of LINCOLN's policy if he had not resigned w ith others to assist in organizing the rebel government. Mr. FLINT served 1 term in the State Senate, and retiring to private life lent the valuable aid of his influence and example to the support of the Republican party. Among the 1st to counsel the consolidation of the Union vote, he was to the last a supporter of the more advanced principles of that party. We regret that lack of space prevents us from paying a worthier tribute to his memory. The best compliment that could be paid him, now that he is gone, would be the collection and publication in book form of his agricultural writings. The act would at the same time be a service to the State. ---------------------------------------------------------- >>TUESDAY, 8 JAN 1867SATURDAY, 12 JAN 1867

Church, corner of Weber avenue and San Joaquin street. Friends and acquaintances of the deceased are invited to attend.] A GOOD MAN GONE -- Rev. C.R. HENDRICKSON, D.D., for nearly 5 years the pastor of the First Baptist Church, has taken his departure for San Francisco, there to reside permanently. The reverend gentleman has left many friends in Stockton, who sincerely regret that he has chosen a new field of usefulness. A SERIOUS CHARGE -- Yesterday morning it was currently rumored in the streets that Kinsey LANIUS was accused of setting fire to a dwelling house on Lindsay's Point, on New Year's day, and that a warrant had been issued for his arrest. It was soon found that Henry BIGELOW, agent of the Pacific Insurance Company, in San Francisco, had entered a complaint before Justice Baldwin on Thursday evening, when the warrant was placed in the hands of an officer. Up to a late hour last night, however, LANIUS had not been arrested, and the opinion generally prevailed that he had left the city. One officer went in the direction of Woodbridge and not learning that the party he was seeking had traveled that way, he took the Upper Sacramento road, but returned without any prisoner. Another officer started out on the Mokelumne Hill and likewise on the Sonora road, but had not returned late in the evening. The motive which prompted the act cannot, it appears, be reasonably accounted for. If gui! lty at all, his object must have been to destroy his own property, which was insured, it is said, for *less* than its real value. However, his arrest and a judicial investigation are the only means of determining his guilty or innocence; and we will await the action of the officers and Courts. The affair created quite a sensation. BY STATE TELEGRAPH, San Francisco, Jan. 4 -- A few minutes after 12 o'clock this noon, the occupants of the building on the SW corner of Sacramento and Kearny streets were startled by the report of a pistol in the room of General C.H.S. WILLIAMS, of the law firm of Williams & Churchill, and upon proceeding to the scene of the explosion, found General WILLIAMS lying upon his back, in an apparently insensible condition. By his side lay a soft hat, the one which he was accustomed to wear, the crown torn to pieces, and a discharged derringer pistol. Physicians were immediately sent for, who made an examination of the wounded man, when it was found that he had been shot in the top or crown of his head. It was evident from the first that the wound was a fatal one, and it was soon pronounced by the physicians. The act is supposed to have been done while he was laboring under a temporary fit of insanity, brought about by a disease of the liver, with which he has long been afflicted.! General C.H.S. WILLIAMS was born in New Hampshire, and studied law with the late Hon. Fletcher M. HAIGHT, in Rochester, N.Y. He was admitted to the bar by the Supreme Court of New York, about 1832, and commenced practice in Cazenovia, Madison county, N.Y., and afterwards practiced in Fredonia and Buffalo, N.Y. He came to California in 1853 and remained in this city [San Francisco] until 1861, when he went to Washoe, whence he returned during the past year. He was a member of the State Senate 1 year, and was one of the most successful practitioners at the California bar. --------------------------------------------------------- THE MURDER at MARTINEZ -- Our readers will remember that a few days since the telegraph made mention of the murder and robbery of an old lady at Martinez. A late number of the Oakland 'News' has the following in reference to the horrible affair: There has been living for some time, near Martinez, an old lady, some 70 years old, a Mrs. KELLEY. She lived alone and was supposed to have considerable money. She was respected by all the community. On the night of the 25th, some person entered her house through a window and murdered her. Her throat was severed by a large knife, and there was a big gash behind the ear. One of her hands was very badly cut, and a finger was split, as if she had made powerful efforts in self-defence. Several persons have been arrested. George SWAIN, Deputy Sheriff of Contra Costa, learned that there had been an Indian drunk that night. He went to his cabin and on searching it found a large knife and 3 loaves of bread. By the manner in which 1 of them had been cut it was identified as one that the old lady had made, in her own house, previous to her death. Under the Indian's bed was found a shirt having upon its bosom the imprint of 5 bloody fingers. SWAIN took the man in charge, and he is now ! imprisoned in Martinez. The Indian has lived there a long time and is well known. The gentleman who wrote to us these particulars, obtained them from Mr. SWAIN directly, and there can be no doubt as to their correctness. --------------------------------- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
