John L. Green, a man of about 30 years of age, was arrested yesterday and taken before Justice Austin, where he was arraigned on a charge of adultery, after which he was lodged in the County Jail. Green was married eight years ago to Sadie Heryford, daughter of Thomas Heryford, who was then living at a place known as Elizabeth Lake, in the northern part of the county. He afterward removed to San Francisco, where he remained for some time. He later on went to Chicago, leaving his wife at the city on the bay. He sent her money occasionally for a time, but, so the story goes, he finally stopped doing this, and his wife was obliged to return to the home of her parents, where she has been remaining ever since. Meanwhile Green had been paying attention to Miss M. B. Watson, the daughter of the landlady at his lodging-house, and had won her affections from another young man paying court to her. A letter written afterward by this young lady to the abandoned wife states that he at first represented himself as a widower, but that at a later time he admitted his wife was living. He said, however, that she had married him for his money, and he expected to get a divorce from her soon. The young man finally came to Los Angeles again, and was seen in company with a third woman, who is supposed to have gone to Chicago. This is the woman with whom it is charged that he has lived in adultery. It is stated, on the part of the prosecution, that Green claim to have a divorce from his first wife, which fact would clear him from prosecution on the charge. It is also said that if he has such divorce it must have been obtained through perjury, for which he can be convicted. If it can be shown that he has married another woman then there is a case of bigamy. Green was seen at the County Jail by a Times reporter. He said that he did not wish to say much about the affair just at present. He would state, however, that the whole thing was a scheme to extort money from him. The preliminary examination in the case has been set for next Wednesday. Los Angeles Times, October 12, 1893, page 2 Green Adultery Case The case of John L. Green, charged with adultery, was called before Justice Austin, but was continued one week on the statement of the prosecution that two of the people’s witnesses had disappeared. Los Angeles Times, November 2, 1893, page 8 The Green Adultery Case The adultery case against J. L. Green occupied all of yesterday in Justice Austin’s court. All of the morning session and a large portion of the afternoon was consumed in disposing of the necessary preliminaries and securing a jury satisfactory to counsel on both sides. Only three witnesses were examined, and the testimony developed contained but few facts of importance further that what has already been published. It will be remembered that it is alleged that Green did, some time in September, live in open and notorious adultery with a certain woman in Los Angeles, when, at the same time, his wife, formerly Miss Heryford, was at the residence of her father near Elizabeth Lake, which place is close to the northern boundary of the county. Los Angeles Times, November 2, 1893, page 8 Convicted of Adultery. The adultery case against John L. Green was concluded in Justice Austin’s court yesterday morning. A number of witnesses for the prosecution were examined, and it was brought out in the testimony that Green had been living at the house of a Mrs. Hopkinson with a woman he represented to be his wife. The defense did not offer any testimony, and did not cross-examine the witnesses. After argument, the case was submitted to the jurk (sic.), and that body, after being out for about ten minutes, brought in a verdict of guilty. Green was ordered to appear tomorrow for sentence. It is not improbable that the case will be appealed to the Superior Court. Los Angeles Times, December 19, 1893, page 4 Mrs. Sadie Green was granted a decree by Judge Smith yesterday morning, divorcing her from J. L. Green, who submitted to a default therein, upon the ground of adultery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Easton, 29, was burned to death in his home at 1420 F street. Mr. and Mrs. Easton and a half-dozen other couples had made the rounds of local night clubs. At about 12:30 Mr. Easton – “Bill” to his many friends – said he “had enough for the evening” but urged his wife to stay with the party. The couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Barbara, was spending the evening at the Jack Walker home, where a girl had been engaged to look after the children of several others attending the party. Mrs. Easton and a party of friends drove Mr. Easton home. He sat down on the chesterfield in the living room, lit a cigarette and bade the others goodnight. It was then 1 a.m., and he was not seen alive again. Shortly before 2 o’clock, Chris enes of Pittsburg, visiting at the Ellsworth Wells residence, saw flames inside the Easton home. He attempted to break in, battered on the door, but received no response. Mrs. Wells then telephoned an alarm to the Antioch Fire Department, less than a minute after a similar alarm was sent in from the Serve-Rite Bakery. A crew of firemen under Assistant Chief Charles Sweeney rushed to the scene. Flames were shooting high in the air as the roof and furniture of the house burned. Two hose lines were brought into play, and in 20 minutes the fire was sufficiently under control so that Chief Sweeney could enter the gutted home. Almost at once, the beam of his flashlight disclosed the body of Mr. Easton, lying just inside the bedroom door. The body was burned beyond recognition; positive identification was made several hours later by Dr. Luke Bryan, local dentist, by means of dental charts. Chief of Police Al LeRoy and Police Commissioner Grover Donovan at once began an investigation of the fire, questioning those who had been at the party, and exploring every possibility. As Chief LeRoy reconstructs the tragedy, Mr. Easton dropped his cigarette, or a spark from it, onto the cushions of the chesterfield. He then entered the bedroom and laid down on the bed, falling asleep at once. The cigarette smoldered in the excelsior stuffing of the chesterfield, finally burst into flames. A nearby window drape ignited. Almost instantly, the room filled with dense smoke. Police believe Mr. Easton was partly suffocated as he slept; awakening, he attempted to enter the living room, which by that time was an inferno of smoke and flame. A blast of fire struck him unconscious and he fell by the doorway, where his body was found approximately half an hour later by Chief Sweeney. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Preston’s chapel. Burial will be at the Masonic and Odd Fellows cemetery. Rev. Kenneth Adams of the Methodist church will officiate. Surviving relatives, in addition to his wife, Martha, and daughter, Barbara, are: Constable Joe Rodda and William Rodda, both of Pittsburg, uncles; Mrs. William Stone, Pittsburg, aunt; Mrs. Harriett Rodda, Pittsburg, grandmother; Mrs. Joseph Mello, Montana, sister; Mrs. Tony Faria, Antioch, sister; Wendell Easton, Antioch, brother. Mr. Easton was a member of a pioneer family which lived for many years at Somersville, where his father, W. M. Easton, was prominent in coal mining circles. Deceased was born in Antioch January 17, 1909. An autopsy was performed late this afternoon by Dr. Thomas J. Dozier. Report on his findings – expected to be death by smoke strangulation – will not be available until Coroner C.L. Abbott conducts the official county inquest. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! TM http://www.NewspaperAbstracts.com

Mrs. Lillace DANIELS, died at the residence of her stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary JONES, 64 West Julian Street, yesterday afternoon shortly before 4 o'clock. Her death was not unexpected, as she had been for several years failing in health and when death came the change seemed to be but the passing into as easy but everlasting sleep. To the pioneers of the county the news of her death will bring more than the usual sadness, for as one of their number many have made it yearly practice to pay her a visit and spend a day conversing upon subjects of which none but those who came to the county in early days could intelligently speak, She was one of those motherly old ladies who took an interest in the welfare of all, and made her friendship known not alone in words but in deeds. Mrs. Lillace DANIELS was born in Franklin county, Kentucky on May 18, 1801 and was 91 years and 10 months of age. When she was 5 years old her family moved to Indiana, in which state she was married to William DANIELS, and by the marriage became stepmother to two children, one of whom is Mary JONES with whom she spent the later years of her life. In 1842 Mr. DANIELS moved his family to Iowa and in 1846 the long and perilous journey of crossing the plains was undertaken. Mr. DANIELS and family started at first with the noted DONNER Party, but on reaching the Little Platte river, in Missouri, the company devided and their party came by the Southern route and arrived in Sutter's Fort in November 1846, where they remained during the Winter. Early in the month of February, 1947, they continued their journey, settling in San Jose, and one year later established their home on the premises where now stands the DANIELS house, which is known to most everyone, having been built acco! rding to the old octagon style in 1861. On these premises, Mrs. DANIELS spent continuosly the last forty-three years of her life. Her only child, Miss Hattie, died in 1861, having reached the age of twenty-one years. In 1873, her husband, William DANIELS, who had taken a prominent part inpolitics and was the occupant on severl occasions of municipal offices, died, and from this time on Mrs. DANIELS made her home with her stepdaughter, Mrs. Mary JONES. Her other stepdaughter, Mrs. S. DODD, died in 1865. From a family of nine children Mrs DANIELS was the last to surrender to the calls of death. The funeral will take place from the home at 64 West Julian Street, Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ CA-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
