Tim: A g-g-g-grandfather of mine, named William W. West, went to California during the Gold Rush and died somewhere in California in 1856. Is there any mention of him in these diaries? He was from Maine and was a seafarer. I have no idea if he had taken a load of passengers to California on his ship or if he just had gold fever himself.
