Steve, Too bad your COOLEY is not WOOLEY.:)))) I'm interested in your HILL's, especially with this MO>CA and back connection [on the Panama] route. My Mary Virginia HILL and her brother John C HILL, crossed from Clark Co MO, via steamship to Isthmus in 1854 to CA. Mary & John's uncle [Capt Granderson "Grant" R Winfrey HILL] owned or captained a steamship during this time. It is believed that the uncle made a trip to CA by ship in 1850. That is the time that is believed that the father of Mary & John also came to CA. The father, John Christopher HILL, died sometime before Sep 1853. The mother, Casandra Melinda FLOYD-HILL remarried a William Harrison ORR [undeterred if this happened in MO or CA, before or after Casandra & the 2 children made the trip to CA in 1854]. I'm still looking for some death information on John Christopher HILL, don't know how he died, where he died or where his body may be resting. From guardianship documents filed in Clark Co MO in Sep of 1853, is how an approximate death date has been established. It would appear that he had holdings in MO, and may have been involved in something other/and/or than mining in CA during the approximate 3 years he was there. He was a very young man at his death, 36 years old. It appears that he did not bring his family with him in 1850. Any one that can shed any light on this family would be greatly appreciated. He went overland from MO to CA in 1849 to look for Gold. He did well & returned to MO in about a year with gold bars. Return route: Took a boat from San Francisco to the Ismus. Walked across Ismus and took a boat to New Orleans. Two that probably traveled with him were Gideon Coleman Hill and Daniel Nodding Hill. Would appreciate any help or suggestions on sites I should be searching.
