Jeni: In "The Big Four" by Oscar Lewis (1946) it states that Leland Stanford went west in 1852 and traveled by steamer to San Francisco. There are about 4 pages about his early life in the east and in California in this book. It apparently draws on a biography In H. H. Bancrofts works.
