    3. Jamie: Don't know where you're coming from, but I hope you know that LA is a "fer piece" from Sierra County. Sierra County is a great place to visit and do research. My Great-Great- Grandfather came to Sierra County in 1859, lured by the reports of gold. Downieville is the capital (a really small town of <400 people -- only about 3,500 people in the whole county!!). Downieville can be reached via State Highway 49 which runs off Interstate 80 in Auburn. Auburn is about 35 miles east of Sacramento on I80, going east toward Reno. Take Highway 49 north and follow the signs to Nevada City/Grass Valley and on to Downieville. It's about a 1 1/2 hour+ drive from Auburn. Good roads and I'm sure no snow (it's been 70s -80s here the last week) but some tight turns so be careful. There are motels in Downieville if you wish to spend the night. The courthouse in Downieville has a lot of old records (try the Clerk-Recorder for b,m,d, etc. and the Superior Court (2nd floor) for Naturalization, probate, etc.). I think they open at 8:00 and close at 4:00 p.m. The Clerk-Recorder's telephone number is (530) 289-3295 if you need to confirm hours, etc. Do you know the specific location where they settled? (Ask the staff at the courthouse. They have a lot of information and they are extremely helpful. Lee Adams is the Sheriff of Sierra County and is an accomplished genealogist/historian. I am sending him a copy of your e-mail. If he is available perhaps he can answer some questions/point you in some directions. His office is next to the courthouse.) If you haven't, you may wish to check out the Sierra County GenWeb site (including the resources on the site) at: http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/sierrcty.htm and the Sierra County site at: http://www.sierracounty.org/ Good luck. Please let me know how your trip turns out.
