    3. Most of the California mining was done in the Sierras, just look at your California map along Highway 49. However there was mining in all the counties. And many miners used California as a base, & prospected into Nevada & Oregon. If they found a promising claim, they'd try to keep it secret as long as possible to avoid competition, & thieves. There are still active mining claims, placer deposits throughout California.
