Here's what I found in "San Francisco 1846-1856 From Hamlet to City", Roger W. Lotchin - 1997 University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago (page 194). After telling of the Vigilantes being formed 1856 it goes on to say "....Before the citizens group disbanded at the end of the summer, its rope was again called into use. One JOSEPH HEATHERINGTON, undeterred by the two previous lychings, shot a Dr. Randall in an affray. He and a convicted murderer named BRACE were hanged." Is BRACE the RICE that was being inquired about???
