Ralph, Not "originated" I would wager, as "good wheat", "hard wheat", "proper wheat" are all mentioned in several accounts of supplies being brought west. But "Chilli barley" is a new one on me! There were many grains planted in the west long before 1850, it is said that the Spaniards imported "wild oats" from Spain in the 1500's that has degenerated into what we call foxtail; not that I ever saw any professional analysis. There are many kinds of wheat and other grains as well originated long before "the west was won". --JD
