    1. [GOLDRUSH] J. S. Anderson and Proper Wheat
    2. Ralph Anderson
    3. Hi, Is anyone knowledgeable concerning "Proper" wheat which reportedly originated in Sutter County? According to Thompson and West's county history (1879), "In 1854 , while cutting Chilli barley on his place in Sutter County, J. S. ANDERSON discovered a head of wheat which he plucked. He planted the seed in his garden successively for three years. But no care was taken and little raised. He sold the farm and the buyer cultivated and later marketed the grain and it was credited as being the origin of the celebrated Proper wheat." A James S. ANDERSON, who I believe to be my grandfather, patented a farm on the SW ΒΌ of section 32 of the township 14-N, 3-E Mt. Diablo Meridian. I believe that this places the property SSW of Yuba City between Bailey Road and George Washington Blvd. The land was claimed in 1867, but James ANDERSON had lived on the land since 1856 or earlier. J.W. GRITHER and William M. BELL signed affidavits in connection with the Preemption listing in 1867. The ANDERSON family moved to Oakland in 1868 and presumably sold the farm at that time, I would like to determine if J. S. ANDERSON the wheat farmer was James S. ANDERSON my grandfather. A complication is that there were apparently two different James S. ANDERSONS in Marysville during this period. Any information would be appreciated. Ralph Anderson Boulder, CO rkaboulder@bwn.net
