Greetings Listers I am having another attempt at tracing my great-grandfather, John POLGLASE, who emigrated to California round about 1868 and, after a few years, disappeared.. His youngest son was born that year which is why I cannot be more precise with my dates - but presumably he was still in Cornwall for part of the year at least! One of John's cousins, Edward MOYLE, left for California about the same time, his descendants gave me the shipping details but there was no evidence of John travelling on the same ship. Edward died in Nevada City on 8th July 1923. John regularly sent home money to his wife then the payments suddenly ceased. John's two sons, Joseph POLGLASE and John George POLGLASE, left for California when John George was old enough, to look for their father. They heard several rumours - married someone else, joined the Mormons, buried in a mass grave after an epidemic hit the mining community, etc. There is a John POLGLASE in the 1870 Census for Grass Valley who was five years younger than our John and living with several other Cornish miners in the one house. A group in California did follow up this lead for me but the family details were different. John's details: John POLGLASE, born 3rd January 1839 in Kerthenwood, Cornwall. (Kerthenwood was a hamlet between Townshend and St.Erth but now only one original wall remains standing and forms one wall of a barn on Kerthenwood Farm.). Johnand his wife, Rosina GEORGE, settled in Townshend where their children, including my maternal grandmother, were born. John was the son of Thomas POLGLASE and Jennifer WILLIAMS, formerly of Breage. John married Rosina GEORGE in Crowan Parish Church on 16th November 1861. According to my late uncle, Godolphin COCK, the last correspondence from John POLGLASE came from Nevada City. Hoping someone out there can solve this mystery before my generation dies out too!!!.
