Searching for connections on my gggrandmother, Anna SHORTELL. She was born in Sutter Creek in May of 1968. She married a man named HALL. I don't know what happened to him. She then married my gggrandfather, John SLEIGHT around September of 1893. Thanks, Julie Hendrix

Hi All: I would also like to know the answer to the request listed. My g grandfather Enos Orrin Darling was also a physician in the 1880's early CA, and when I went to the state to locate his license application for California I was told that all the old ones had been destroyed. ( By the State of California ) I reverified this information at the time ( about 10 years ago ) thru the local Assemblyman's office. Any further information would be greatly appreciated. Can anyone tell me if there were registers of physicians in northern CA from the years 1850 to 1890? I am trying to pinpoint where my gr. grandfather, Dr. J. W. I have in my posession a letter written by the above. I picked it up 30 years ago in San Diego ,I believe. Im not sure of the letter "e"in his last name or even if its a letter.Otherwise, the rest is clear. The letter is dated July 1851. He is a miner and a lawyer in Grass Valley Calif.and was just elected the County Secretary. He left Pulaski March 28 1849 for the goldfields. In the letter he gives several names of relatives and friends still in Michigan, along with Michigonians that were in the area from the American River to Marysville. He mentions weather, miners incomes, prices, lawlessness and the need for more women in the region If you think you may be related to this man, feel free to write. One problem though;I work out of town and only visit the computer once a week for 30 minutes. Dont get discouraged if I am not prompt in responding. My busy work season slows down by April or may. Ill have more access then. John Johnston

Hello Pat, Your timing is unbelieable. I have been working all day on scanning photos I took of a local cemetery in Nov. for a new website I am working on. I do not have the names you are looking for, but, I do have photos of the tombstones of Mary Ann Polglase, 1867 - 1955 and Elmer Sam Polglase, 1905 - 1962. I will check further, tomorrow. My eyes are weary now. I do have tombstones from the You Bet Cemetery on my other website. You may want to check it. (below) Karen sumrg@jps.net http://members.xoom.com/KGDYER Greetings Listers I am having another attempt at tracing my great-grandfather, John POLGLASE, who emigrated to California round about 1868 and, after a few years, disappeared.. His youngest son was born that year which is why I cannot be more precise with my dates - but presumably he was still in Cornwall for part of the year at least! One of John's cousins, Edward MOYLE, left for California about the same time, his descendants gave me the shipping details but there was no evidence of John travelling on the same ship. Edward died in Nevada City on 8th July 1923. John regularly sent home money to his wife then the payments suddenly ceased. John's two sons, Joseph POLGLASE and John George POLGLASE, left for California when John George was old enough, to look for their father. They heard several rumours - married someone else, joined the Mormons, buried in a mass grave after an epidemic hit the mining community, etc. There is a John POLGLASE in the 1870 Census for Grass Valley who was five years younger than our John and living with several other Cornish miners in the one house. A group in California did follow up this lead for me but the family details were different. John's details: John POLGLASE, born 3rd January 1839 in Kerthenwood, Cornwall. Lookup Volunteers. Thank you all for your many suggestions on the Martha family. Sandra my information did not come from a Calif. resource on county index CADI's. I was visiting in the DC archives and found a book listing the 1870 index for other than S.F. county. It listed Martha's in two other counties in No. Calif. but unfortunately our time in DC was limited and I could not pursue it. Again many thanks to you for all the great help you have given in the past for my lookuup request and your mailing of obits, etc. They have given me an abundance of leads to follow. A Happy New Millineum to All and again many thanks! LuzE. luzel@aol.com
Well, I have some good news. Found some material for you that I believe will be helpful. In 1860 census Amador W.S. COOMBS age 31 born PA carpenter Adelaide 21 OH Ida May 6/12 CA in 1870 I couldn't read the census. in 1880 sndx Amador 2-34-38-1 W.S. COOMBS 52 PA Adelaide 41 OH Ida 21 CA Lillie 16 CA Cora 14 CA Frances 7 CA Mirtie 5 CA Edward A. 3 CA I couldn't find Adelaie COOMBS in the CADI for 1907 at all. I believe the Cora you mention is Mrs. Cora V. HALL who married Arthur H. COOMBS in SF in 1916. Dod for her was age 63 SF July 12 1929. If Arthur is related then she is one of yours. I could not find Estella COOMBS in the CADI either but I did find Edward Allen COOMBS. He died in Sacramento age 53 on Apr 16 1931. Got an obit on him. There are several COOMBS in the death index for Amador. Do any of these ring a bell? Joseph H. COOMBS age 60 (spouse H) Jun 18 1921 Mildred P.COOMBS 7 months Feb 28 1918 Thomas E. COOMBS spouse P age 38 Apr 29 1919 >From the NDGW: W. S. COOMBS was born Uniontown PA about 1824 arrived in CA July 26 1850 overland by the Carson Trail Information by Emma Boarman WRIGHT Jackson CA >From Edward's obit - he was the brother of Mrs. Frances (age 7 in the 1880 census) BODIENT of Sacramento, Mrs. Myrtle (Mirtie age 5) GONZALES of TX and the uncle of L. B. COOMBS of Los Angeles. He is the right one because he is a native of Ione and he is buried in Ione Cemetery. i hope this helps. If you send me your address I can mail you the copies. I looked in the DAR Books at the Sac St. Library today for your Martha...but absolutely no luck finding anything.....no birth record for child bap. SF 1871, nor any SF deaths 1870 onward. I have no explanation. Ralph Clouse, Sacramento
