Does anyone have any information on James Alexander McDougal? He was practicing law in San Francisco in 1850. Previously, had been the Attorney General of Illinois and later held the same post in California. Bob
I am looking for information on a Joseph Shartz or Sharts. He was born in Frederick County, MD about 1823, moved to Indiana shortly after, and drowned in the American River about 1855, according to a Marion County, Indiana history book. Do not have any further information. Would love to know a possible location/cemetery, etc. Thank you for your help. Marilyn Indiana
I'd like to share with you a new mailing list CA-DEATH-INDEX-L@rootsweb.com and CA-DEATH-INDEX-D@rootsweb.com (digest) especially for archiving CADI lookups so that only one list has to be searched to find previously identified CADI information. If you're already on the rootsweb.com mailing list you know the subscribe procedures (I'll include them at the end of the message for those that can't remember) So.... If you are a volunteer that does CADI lookups I would like to invite you to subscribe and provide assistance to others that are looking for CADI information. If you currently post the data found to a county list or a regional list, just add this list to your address book and post your results here also to make searching easier Or If you are looking for CADI information, this is the list to ask for help. Or If you have had CADI information provided to you in the past and would like to have it posted to the list so that others can find it in the archives, you're welcome to post those previous lookups also. I would like to see CA death transcriptions shared here also...... So if you are one of those volunteers that visits recorder's offices on a regular basis and does death certificate transcriptions, please share your information here. Or if you have death certificates in your possession and would like to share, please post them also..... With the advent of all the CA county lists it has become increasingly difficult to search the archives for all the previous CADI listings that have been provided between NORCAL, SOCAL, CAROOTS, etc. So, if you do either sort of lookup, CADI or death certificate transcriptions, please subscribe and share. It's really easy to just put the address in your address book and remember to add it to the message when you do your regular post to NORCAL, SOCAL, CAROOTS or your county list. For those that don't need another list to belong to, I would be happy to post your past or present CADI or death certificate transcriptions for you - just send me the information at norby@ainet.com Colleen Norby Subscribe to the list in mail mode by sending a message to CA-DEATH-INDEX-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, you should send the command instead to CA-DEATH-INDEX-D-request@rootsweb.com. To unsubscribe, you should send the command "unsubscribe" to CA-DEATH-INDEX-L-request@rootsweb.com (if in mail mode) or CA-DEATH-INDEX-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, you should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if you want messages to stop, you should simply unsubscribe.

There's a picture of Lienhard at http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi915.htm OF POWER AND GOLD by John H. Lienhard Today, let's talk about power and the gold rush. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. In 1848, 72 years later, at Sutter's Fort in California, my great-grandfather Heinrich was putting in a vegetable garden for Sutter. Everything was still labor-intensive. Watt's power-producing engines had yet to reach this remote outback. Sutter had been acting strangely for two weeks. One evening he showed Heinrich and some other friends a small bag of yellow metal grains. Could it be gold? Heinrich described a malleability test and suggested they try it at the blacksmith's shop. They cleaned a spoon, heated it, and put a metal grain in it. When they hammered the hot metal, it spread out smoothly as gold does and its imitators do not. Sutter had indeed located gold. The story leaked out, and the rest is history. But great-grandpa Heinrich was bothered. Who had really found the gold, and where? Everyone was making claims -- Sutter included. I'm John Lienhard, at the University of Houston, where we're interested in the way inventive minds work. The Engines of Our Ingenuity is Copyright © 1988-1997 by John H. Just a reminder to anyone that plans on responding to this subject. I will be out of town for about 3 days. It could possibly be as long as a week,so be patient with the delays in my responding to your email. John Johnston Palm Springs Ca.
Heres what I received in response to the prior diary names. This email came from Pulaski area in Michigan tonight! He also referred to himself as the "Wanderer" in the diary. This response indicates he was a traveler. Ssounds pretty close. Mabe the information supplied here will help someone out there. I have a book that has a history of Jackson and the counties nearby. There is a township named Pulaski and a town named Concord. There was a Hiram C. Hodge, the "Hon. Hiram C. Hodge" of Concord. His brother was Milton H. Hodge of Pulaski Township. Their father, Warner L. Hodge was the first Town Clerk of Pulaski and was the town clerk or Supervisor for many years. His wife was Sarah Hodge. Milton lived on the land that his father bought from the government in 1835. He and his maiden sister owned the old homestead. Hiram was born at Stamford, Bennington County, VT on 2/22/1821. Their ancestors were English, French and Welsh. They moved to Adams, Mass. when Hiram was 2 yrs old and came to MI in 35-36-37. There were 10 children in the family but only 8 survived. He taught school at the age of 15, devoting all his time to study of the law. He studied with the Hon Fidus Livermore of Jackson and commenced his studies at the office of Messrs. Tallman & Dean of Poughkeepsie NY in 1848. He left MI for the newly doscovered El Dorado, CA . He was a great Traveler and wrote stories for the press. He was a member of both houses of MI legislature representing the county of Jackson in 1878-79. He was living in Concord Village in MI abt 1880-1881. He wrote a work on the AZ territory and had great interest in it. His motto was" Examine all things and hold fast to everything which is for the good of humanity." There was no mention of a wife in the book of of a person named Lucy Hodge, his mother' s name was Sarah so it wasn't her. If you want , I will copy the pages and send them to you. I think that your Hodge and this one are proably one and the same. He is an interesting historical figure in MI. Maybe there is a historical society that would be interested or could hook you up with the family. There is a Jackson County Geneology society and they have a web address, I don't have it handy but try Yahoo, "Jackson County Geneology So. Hope to hear from you. The following names are from a diary written by HC.Hodge(there may be another letter after the "e" or its an ending sweep with the pen) He left Michigan, either Pulaski or Concord ,in abt 1849 and arrived in Nevada Co. abt Oct 1850. The diary is written in July 1851. By now he is a practicing attorney, recently elected Nevada Co. Treasurer and part time miner. He talks about some of the issues of the time in the gold camps along with relatives and friends in Michigan and those that are working in his area and others over on the American River. I picked this booklet up in 1959-65 . I dont recall just where I found it,as Ive traveled all over the western states kicking around mining areas until about 1974 Thats about the time the total destruction was beginning from being visited by hoards of explorers, some who tore down entire buildings and bulldozed vast areas looking for "booty". The old wagons remaining and all the old cars I'd see dating from 1915 up disappeared beginning in 74. I quit visiting and researching these areas then. Anyway,I think I found the booklet in an old building in the general area, but Im not absolutely certain. I have the booklet in storage about 600 miles from me,but I took notes and have them with me for reference incase anyone has questions. All email I write on this subject goes to Michigan also in hopes of snagging a connection there too . Homer Horatio Milton James & Sarah Reuben & Mary Abraham (sp?) Carolina Sarah E Mason Henry Chesbro(sp?) Father Wilbur Dact Minzie(sp?) Mr.Bruttenden of Concord Mr Wheeler Billings Livermore Hastings L. Lee Almond The Miltons Sis "Poco Tampo" John Morris (local miner and Michigander) along with Austin and Wm Morris(old man) Allan and Ash (sp?) Grover Henry Stiles (sp?) Toby John French Myricks The Fords of Jackson Uncle Abraham Edmonds & Geo. Edmonds Gardner, a city physician with Fischer (of the local Pennsylvania settlement) has office in my building R.M. Fuller of Concord Alexander Samual Joseph Thorn David Hepler Larry Syne Now names of friends and relatives again: Aunt Eliza , Edwin A Simmons Jane Simmons Eliza S and children, Minerva and Deferret(?) Aunt Mary and family, Uncle John and Fam,ily M. Ambrose,Hannah,Sarah,Uncle Daniel,Aunt Labith (?) Father and Mother Wilbur and family The Stockys(?) Butlers The Authors father died March 28 1849(shortly after the author left home for Calif. Lucy who died a loved one back home, possibly a girlfriend or wife . He's quite emotional when speaking of the latter two deaths. He mentions trying to forget the painful past of these deaths The church he attends is the Methodist Episcopals who have quarterly meetings in his office or building He receives a publication "The Patriot"which he loved to read and the "Nevada Journal" (he sent copies back home to Pulaski friends or relatives ) I mentioned this incase anyone still has those copies,as this letter is also emailed to Michigan besides Nevada Co. in hopes of someone there related. Ive listed seemingly unimportant facts to many that may view this, but this email is going to various Cities in the California and Michigan in hopes of finding links to this man and any of his ancestors. For that matter even others as myself that may have info on this man or his names mentioned in the diary. If anyone makes any connections,Id be interested in knowing the results,so please write me. Sorry folks I have to reply to this one, ANYONE who doesn't want us talking about occupants of Nevada County (since this stupid rule was applied to that board also) or miners during the goldrush days shouldn't be wasting their time on this board. The whole purpose of these boards is finding a link to someone who may have known or worked with or lived with your ancestor. SO ANY OCCUPANT of Nevada County or the GoldRush era belongs on the board because if he worked, lived or accidentally walked into my GrgRgrandfather then that makes him close enough to be FAMILY in my book. I'm not looking for your family, I'm looking for MINE. You don't like seeing other names, then SKIP the dang list. AND YES, I'm holding back my temper because of idiots who don't use their brains when compiling rules that render a genealogy board USELESS. Enough said, Colin Brooks (just in case you got the name wrong the first time)
TO PJ : Nevada Query Board? Tell me how I can access it and I'll post the names there. If Im not allowed to post these names on your Nevada Co. forum unless they're related to me ,then where can I post them. Im sure anyone related to these 1849-51 miners of Grass Valley and Nevada City would like to find this information and where it could lead. John Johnston
Woops! I forgot to list all the names. Bear with me until I gather them. Should be sometime today. John Johnston Palm Springs Ca.
The following names Ive pulled from a letter written by a H.C.Hodge while in Nevada Co. Calif., who was a Lawyer,Nevada Co. Treasurer, and part time miner. He mentions several names of friends and relatives in his home in Pulaski Michigan and in nearby Concord. He also mentions names from his home that are currently working in the area mines. There will be lengthy delays in my responding to any email, ranging from a couple days to a week or two,so be patient. In the event I unsubscribe from this forum and you still wish to contact me , email to me directly only in that event, please. John Johnston Palm Springs Ca. lrjwj@aol.com
I have a g-g-g-grandfather William Heath who left for the goldrush in 1849 and was never heard from again. This is what I know about him: William Heath b. May 20, 1820 m. Lucinda Hargrave on Aug. 29, 1847 child b. May 9, 1848 named Marion Franklin Heath the marriage, and birth of Marion Franklin took place in Warrick Co. IN Wm. left for CA in 1849. Lucinda died not long after Wm. left, leaving Marion Franklin essentially an orphan He was raised by a family named Leach, I believe in Warrick/Pike Co. IN areas. He recorded a land patent for 42 acres in Warrick Co. IN on Aug 1, 1839 So this is what I do know...Wendy, can you tell me more about this book you mentioned? I was trying to figure out how he would have gone to CA. HE could have died along the way, or not...I am not sure how to begin. I don't even know where in CA the gold rush was. Any ideas anyone???
