I looked thru my cemetery list collection and didn't find any COLOMBETor BELLON(Sorry), but I did find your Alexander GENESY, b1832 in France, d 3-26-1884, list says "Burial plot not located". Also listed there is an Alexander GENESEY, no birth-death details, but burial site given as A5-025-WE (WE means west end of the cemetery). Cem is Silver Terrace Cemetery in Virginia City, NV. Source of the info I have is "www.usgenweb.com". I hope this is new information for you. Let me know.
For what it is worth, I have a little booklet called: Lone Mountain Cemetery from Carson City, NV area. It does not list all the burials but has quite a few. If there is someone on the list who would like email me, I will be glad to check to see if your surname is on the list. Since I am not sure how much area the Goldrush list covers, I hope this is appropriate. Diane Biggar-Taylor djtaylor@puc.edu
I can never over emphasize the issue of the lack of recordings of vital statistics after the 1905 law. The following is from the New Era, Alturas, Modoc County, California newspaper of 14 February 1912: Auditor and Recorder T.H. Ballard gives us the following statistics relative to birth, marriages and deaths during the year 1911. Births recorded 77; Marriages 54, Deaths 30. In this connection Mr. Ballard complains of our physicians in recording deaths and births. The law makes failure to send in a record of births and deaths a misdemeanor on the part of physicians, midwives, etc. These statistics are important and should not be neglected.
Charlene, The software product I think was genealogy detective, I bought a copy and found it one of the best, and probably the easiest to use. Actually it pretty neat, and cheap too. http://hop.clickbank.net/hop.cgi?gwadmin/genealogy CharWeston441@aol.com wrote: > Hi all, > > Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but someone had posted an address for > a > free membership genealogy research site, something like 'genealogy world" > or "genealogy of the world", and some new software that was available, but > I accidentially deleted the URL. Gudde, 1975 "Californis Gold Camps", says The diggings beside the (Matheneys) Creek are now witin the city limits of El Dorado. They are mentioned as rich diggings by E D Perkiins on Dec 25, 1849. They are listed as a gold camp in the county history of 1883(p203) The USBureau of the Census lists 672 individuals on Mathinias (or Mathines) Creek in 1850. A Mathines Creek Mine is dexcribed in 1888 in Mining Bureau, VIII, (p190), and is still listed in 1916, though idle. The creek, a tributary to the North Fork of the Cosumnes River....is shown on maps as Mathenas Creek. It may be the same as Maith Creek near Diamond Springs.
Hello, I am looking for any information on "A.D.A.[Augustin Damien Andre] Champion" b/1829 in France. Arrived in San Francisco in Dec.1849. He first went to French Camp and then to Mariposa Co. where in 1852 he applied for his American citizenship. At some point I believe he left Mariposa, and went to Toulumne CO. where he was a merchant of dry goods. I am looking for any thing that might place him there? Perhaps the name of his store? or a newspaper article? Census? He was a well educated man. In 1864 I find "A.D.A." back in Mariposa owning, with partners, a mine. "The Santa Cruzita Gold and Copper Mining Company Vein". I do not know if he was still in the dry goods trade at this time. Should you "strike" anything, please contact me at jacnmac@netdex.com Thank you. Jac McMahon

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to locate an ancestor for whom only incomplete information exists? My GGG grandmother was from Illinois, born about 1836. Her second marriage was to Elijah Perry in Missouri. She joined him by sailing around the horn with 2 children to California prior to 1858. (I know this much because my GG grandfather (John Francis Perry) was born in Fiddletown, CA. in 1858.) Her name prior to her second marriage was either Adeline Mapese or Celia Mapes, and she died in San Jose, in 1898. (No way to know if she remarried, either. Elijah, her second husband, died in 1878.) Also, how could I find out when Elijah arrived in California, and how? He would have arrived between 1849 and 1858. He did find something, because he paid her voyage with gold. Please, if you have any thoughts, I'd be so grateful! Laura

Hi, Did George Gigon die in CA? Have you verified it with a CA Death index lookup? If not I can check for you next week and then maybe you can find someone that will look for an obit....you are talking 1961 right? Phyllis, I found my great grandfather, Adam McDONALD listed on the index for the 1870 Census for Bath, Placer Co. Cathy Patterson > Has anyone on this list worked with ancestors from Bath? If so, I would > like to hear where they found information.
According to Gudde, in "California Gold Camps", Bath was "one mile above Foresthill. It drains into Volcano Canyon and was (1850) originally called Volcano, according to the county history, 1882 (p.375). The name was changed to Sarahsville in 1851 and to Bath in 1858, when the Post Office was established. Doolittle's map, 1868, shows 'Bath P.O.' with Sarahsville as an alternate or former name." Gudde has more detail, but it's mostly about mining history.
I am having difficulty with goldrush ancestors who first appeared to settle in Bath, Placer County, CA. They appeared to be in Bath starting 1862 through at least 1870, and probably much longer. The problem appears to be lack of records, but suspect I am not looking in the right place. I looked through all the Placer County vital records I could borrow through the Family History Center, and out of several films, found only one Barlow record. It was the death record for one of my ancestor's small children. A family of ten children should have been recorded more. There was no recording for the birth of my great grandmother that should have been there. Has anyone on this list worked with ancestors from Bath? If so, I would like to hear where they found information.
What county are these in? Ted: A few years ago I had a wonderful experience when researching a similar question. All I had to go on was family stories and absolutely no hard documentation. The Oregon-California Trails Association(OCTA)was very helpful. At the time, they were pilot-testing a database--COED--Census of Overland Emigrant Documents. They were able to turn up one reference to the "Ball Brothers" which led to a newspaper account of the attack on the wagon train they were part of (from Iowa!). To make a long story short (I'd love to tell you the whole story, but you know how we genealogists are--don't get us started), I'd recommend exploring this organization. They are online at http://w3.trib.com/~lwisch/octa.html. Choose the "Genealogy" button at the bottom of the page and it will give you info on the COED. It sounds like they may be backed up doing the searches, but you might as well get in the line. It does cost, but I had exhausted (I thought) all possible resources. (And look at the "Emigrants" page for an account of my "Ball Brothers" and some other treks. If you need other suggestions, feel free to contact me. (I'm a librarian and I just won't let go of things! :-)) There are some compiled bibliographies that might be helpful, for example--I just don't have them at hand. Good luck! FOR SOME REASON: When I click on the URL address for Geocities Heartland Goldrush, listed in this letter a message comes up from Yahoo stating that this address does not exist on their website. Hello, My great-grandfather, William Wilson Steele, left his home in Delaware County, Iowa, for the gold rush on 1 April 1852. (That date is taken from his obit.) He remained "out west" until August 1866, when he returned to Iowa. I have no details as to how he travelled, where he wound up, or what he did there. We do know that he was injured (the family story is that he "took an arrow in the leg") because he walked with a crutch when he returned to Iowa. Can anyone provide me with basic sources to search? I have already checked the Federal and State censuses for California during this period. There is a possible Wm Steele from Iowa listed in the 1852 state census in Yuba County (p. 134), but the age isn't right. The guy in the census is age 28; my William (b. 1835) would have been 17. Are there indexes to claimes filed, wagon trains to/from, etc??? I'd appreciate any leads. Bob, I find mention of JAMES A. MC DOUGALL (w/two "l's") in a list of "attorneys of note" in San Francisco during 1850-1880. No details at all just his name is listed. This from by book HISTORY OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY REGION, by Bailey Millard, publ 1924. Sorry, I was hoping for a bio for you... Maybe the two "l's" will be a clue for you......
