Well, there's a covered wagon, log cabin, felling trees, plowing, ma and pa with 2.4 children :), definitely a tree, even if it takes the form of a group of families spread out like a descendants chart, a typical descendants chart, and lots of other stuff I can't think of at the moment!
Buildings are boring! Transportation modes, maybe, but that more exemplifies the growth of the nation. But imagine if someone had to choose 4 picture sets of American ancestors to exemplify the hobby! That choosing would be a chore I wouldn't want. Of course, I am partial to favorite pictures of my ancestors . . . -----Original Message----- From: Philip Van Camp [mailto:pvc@vancamp.org] Sent: Wednesday, March 01, 2000 10:43 PM To: CA-GOLDRUSH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GOLDRUSH] Genealogy Postal Stamp Many of their themes are issued in blocks of 4 or six related designs. Ralph, Not "originated" I would wager, as "good wheat", "hard wheat", "proper wheat" are all mentioned in several accounts of supplies being brought west. But "Chilli barley" is a new one on me! There were many grains planted in the west long before 1850, it is said that the Spaniards imported "wild oats" from Spain in the 1500's that has degenerated into what we call foxtail; not that I ever saw any professional analysis. There are many kinds of wheat and other grains as well originated long before "the west was won". --JD
Hi, Is anyone knowledgeable concerning "Proper" wheat which reportedly originated in Sutter County? According to Thompson and West's county history (1879), "In 1854 , while cutting Chilli barley on his place in Sutter County, J. S. ANDERSON discovered a head of wheat which he plucked. He planted the seed in his garden successively for three years. But no care was taken and little raised. He sold the farm and the buyer cultivated and later marketed the grain and it was credited as being the origin of the celebrated Proper wheat." A James S. ANDERSON, who I believe to be my grandfather, patented a farm on the SW ¼ of section 32 of the township 14-N, 3-E Mt. Diablo Meridian. I believe that this places the property SSW of Yuba City between Bailey Road and George Washington Blvd. The land was claimed in 1867, but James ANDERSON had lived on the land since 1856 or earlier. J.W. GRITHER and William M. BELL signed affidavits in connection with the Preemption listing in 1867. The ANDERSON family moved to Oakland in 1868 and presumably sold the farm at that time, I would like to determine if J. S. ANDERSON the wheat farmer was James S. ANDERSON my grandfather. A complication is that there were apparently two different James S. ANDERSONS in Marysville during this period. Any information would be appreciated. Ralph Anderson Boulder, CO rkaboulder@bwn.net
I am attempting to find the fates, possible claims, obituaries, or burial sites on John and Eustace "Stace" CRAWFORD, born 11 December 1826 and 26 October 1828, respectively, in Randolph County, Illinois. They were sons of Samuel CRAWFORD, snr, and Sarah HUGHES. John and "Stace" came to California during the "gold rush," and reportedly were both dead before 1859. An 1859 copy-righted book on Randolph County, Illinois said that they both had died in California. If any of y'all find anything, please e-mail me. THANK YOU ! Greetings all, I found this website and I thought someone on this list might benefit. It's the General Land Office / Bureau of Land Management Land Patent Records for California, apparently going back to 1856. There are indexes by surname and by county. Looks like a lot of good info. http://www.ca.blm.gov/landpatents/ Good luck, Bryan Kercher

The following are exerpts from a letter written by H.C. Hodge while in the Goldfields of California,Nevada City,Nevada Co. California 1851. He originated from around Pulaski Mich.,leaving in 1849 for California goldfields that year. When in Nevada City,1851,he opened up an office as an attorney ,and did gold panning etc on the side. In 1851 he was elected to Treasurer of Nevada County. His Father who had died after he left home was a prominent Judge in the Pulaski ,or Jackson area. The exerpts below are included to reveal the names and context, when possible,so they may be recognized by searchers of the California gold fields and those relations in the Michigan areas doing local research. There has been a little confusion on the reference I sent to some people. Let me explain: What you saw at http://genweb.net/~gen-cds/cdlist.html was a list of references and where the references were located. What you need to do is e-mail an individual that owns a particular CD and ask him/her your request. For example: John owns CD # ABC. He posts on the site that he owns CD # ABC and is willing to do free lookups on that CD. You e-mail John that you found a reference to your relative on CD # ABC and give him the information you have and he e-mails you the results. "Remember: Everyone wants to help someone else".
