    1. [CA-GOLDRUSH-L] GenConnect Board Updates (Query/Obit/Biographical/etc)
    2. Zephyr
    3. The following announcement is furnished for those who have queries in the US/CAGenWeb system on GenConnect Boards. Not all states and counties use the GenConnect system, but many in the CAGenWeb system do. This is for information only and will be sent to the list again on Friday. = = = = = To GenConnect Board Administrators/Users: We're preparing for the latest upgrade to the GenConnect System. There's a few things you need to know about this upgrade ..... The entire GenConnect system will be upgraded starting at midnight on Saturday September 5, 1998. This will require that we shut the system down. The reason is twofold ..... it's not just a patch .... it's a re-write of the program that runs the system. Also, the Global Search engine has been revamped and mega-enhanced, which will require a total rebuild. No new postings can be allowed during this rebuilding period. Downtime is estimated to be 8 hours max (yep .... it's a huge system now!). Anyone attempting to use the system during this downtime will be given notice that it's being upgraded .... no-one will be left in the dark. However, you could help us make this a smoother transition if you would spread the word on any and all of the major mailing lists that you may be subbed to (ROOTS-l, xxROOTS-L, your county lists, surname lists, etc.). Will you help us by doing this? Below are some of the new features that the latest version (1.10) will contain. List of new GenConnect Features: Visitor Toys: Separate entry fields for subject and surnames ..... allows more descriptive subjects (non-surname words won't matter) Main page of each board displays the list of surnames for each query, in addition to the subject .... allows for more surnames to be entered 'Print' option now expanded to include the entire thread (user's option) Surname page will be auto-generated, and auto-updated weekly (more frequently with admin intervention), and will now be alphabetized and hotlinked to the query in which it appears. Cookie support expanded to include "date ranges". Faster, sleeker search engine. Multiple-word surnames supported - including the capability of searching for them. New search options added to the Global Search ..... soundex (enhanced over previous version), partial word match, whole word match, wildcard searching. = = = = = = = = = = PatriciaJ <[email protected]> Rootsweb Sponsor & ListMom CA-GOLDRUSH-L (and -D) PADDOCK-L (and -D) CA-GOLDRUSH WebMaster CAGenWeb Page Coordinator for Nevada, Sierra, Yuba Counties ObitDailyTimes submitter for five newspapers Mother Lode PAFUG WebMaster

    1. [CA-GOLDRUSH-L] PREVIEW of Chino Record Book - Alphabetical Listing - 1849 - 1856
    2. Howdy GoldRushListers, Posting the Mariposa Battalion Roster, reminded me of a similar prior project. Sometime ago, Cindy, Rita and I posted a listing of those who signed the Chino Record Book. In fact, at least one guy, L. H. BUNNELL, is on both the Chino list and the Battalion roster.. There may be other doubles - just haven't checked Since the Chino Record List is long, I plan to post it over 3 days: This Preview and Part 1 for today. Parts 2 and 3 coming tomorrow - Parts 4 and 5 on Friday..This will be a REPEAT for some of you. For those unfamiliar with the Chino Record Book List, I have edited the PREVIEW, which I previously sent as follows: " Cindy LoBuglio, Rita Avila and I want to share with you the fruits of our combined labors... " We have compiled an alphabetical listing of the Southern Trail overland emigrants who either signed or were mentioned in the Chino Record Book, 1849 -1856. CINDY furnished a translation of the Record Book of the Rancho del Chino published by the Historical Society of Southern California in their 1934 Annual Publication. RITA, through a relative got me a copy of Edwin Rhodes' "The Break of Day in Chino" that chronologically lists the names of only of those who actually signed the book. .I cross-checked and alphabetized all the names/addresses mentioned in the book, together with their page number in the original book. Then I snailed my offline Mac floppy with the list to Cindy and Rita. With a lot of work, they fixed it up for me to post on my online 386. " To explain the Chino Rocord Book - a refresher for some - here is my posting from some months ago: " The early travelers of the SOUTHERN trail found at the Rancho Santa Ana del CHINO, owned then by Isaac WILLIAMS, the first outpost of help and hospitality in southern Calfornia. "Isaac WILLIAMS kept a register from 1849 to 1856, the year of his death, in which were recorded business transactions, messages to friends, reports of tragedies on the trip, or just remarks of those who stopped to recuperate from their desert crossing and share in the hospitality of the hacienda. This register, now [1951?] at the HUNTINGTON Library in Pasadena, is one of the most valuable records of early California in existence. Every page carries its stories of hardship and courage penned by the tired and calloused hands of those pioneers who had gained the haven of WILLIAMS' kindness after their long. and grueling trek. "The roster of names signed in the book represents emigrants from every state in the union and forms an AUTHENIC record of the entry to California of many whose descendants are still enjoying the fruits of their forefathers' great journey."(Taken from "The Break of Day in Chino" by Edwin Rhodes)" If any of you find a possible relative mentioned, please let us know. Might be able to find some more info for you. Part 1 will be coming in a bit:-) Bob Norris in Dallas <BNorris166aol.com>

    3. Hi, Bob: Found two probable family members, although not direct-line ancestors. My Aunt married Jack Tannehill in 1910 and he died a few years later in an accident. The Tannihill you list is of great interest as there aren't many around of this surname! The other is Milhouse - the spelling is the same as for my Revolutionary ancestor John Milhouse, so this is likely to be one of his descendants. Several other names ring a bell, so it looks like my work is cut-out for me to do more research on your source. Thanks for the alphabetical listing. It always makes things easier for us that way! Have a very good day! Patricia <[email protected]> [email protected] wrote: > > Howdy, > Here's the rest: > > MARIPOSA BATTALION > Muster Roll > Alphabetical Listing > Part 2 - Final >

Hi Patricia - Under the Battalion's Company A listing in the Russell/Elliott books, here's what it says about your second guy: "MILHOUSE, Gustavis, Private, 25, Santa Barbara, California." Nothing else on Tannihill. But it's neat that I may have helped some. Good hunting, Bob

    1. [CA-GOLDRUSH-L] MARIPOSA BATTALION - Muster Roll - ADAMS Thru HUNTER
    2. Howdy, In my Battalion/YoSemite postings, I forgot to roll the credits for the Mariposa Battalion members:-))) I suspect the Battalion's Muster Roll can be found in a bunch places. Probably one of its first published listings was in ELLIOTT's "History of Fresno County,"(1881). Carl Parcher RUSSELL's "One Hundred Years in Yosemite"(1959) picked up this roster. They list by companies: A, B & C. Also, Robert ECCLESTON's Mariposa Battalion diary lists a few officers. To help us jennilogists, family historians and researchers who like to scan for our names, I alphabetically list the Battalion members as a whole. Also, I have tried to point out certain inconsistencies in the list names. Sorta like I did on the Chino Reord Book List - only not nearly as much:-)) Wish I had time to check all the names BECAUSE I just know there are some name spelling errors. Betcha, the Battalion/Company clerks were left- handed(like me) with my near illegible penmanship:-) Seems like I always need to thank folks:-)) But I could never have put this together without the materials and help from my list friends, Carolyn Feroben, Cindy LoBuglio & Ruth Skewis. They are super-great peoples:-). Anyway, in two parts, here is OUR roster: MUSTER ROLL, MARIPOSA BATTALION Muster Roll of a volunteer Battalion under the command of James D. SAVAGE, mustered into the service of the State of California by James BURNEY, Sheriff of Mariposa, pursuant to an order from his excellency, the Governor of the State of Callifornia, bearing date January 24, 1851 . 3. Hi Nancy, I missed the querrie- I don't know if any of these could be a match but hopefully might help . Guddes_California Gold Camps_ lists GOLD BAR (Nevada) On the south fork of Yuba River. Peter Decker mined here with good success in the summer of 1850 GOLD BAR (Placer) On the Middle Fork of American River, six miles east of Auburn. There was gold mining with intermittent success from the early 1850's. In 1875 a Gold Bar Mining Company with a capital of 10 million dollars was incorporated. In Guddes _California Place Names_ there is just this: In Death Valley national Monument are Goldbelt Springs and Goldbar. Neither one mentions one in Trinity. But a USGS on line search:http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html mentions GOLD BAR in Trinity, the GOLD BAR mine in Los Angeles County, the GOLD BAR Mine in Siskiyou, and the GOLD BAR PORTAL mine in San Bernadino. I'm looking for a William or William O. Clarkson, we lost him after the 1850 census in IL, his wife and children turned up in MO in 1860. I saw a reference of a William in the Los Tulares index which I'll write for, also in The San Francisco Call Database, which I'll also write for, I hope I'm on the right track. Appreciate any information you find. Thanks in advance. Rhoda

    1. [CA-GOLDRUSH-L] The Mariposa Battalion - mustering out - July 1, 1851
    2. Howdy, I suspect I do the Mariposa Battalion an injustice by not posting more of their Indian Adventures in early 1851. But my primary postings purpose was to discover YoSemite, not to corral Indians - thank goodness:-))) I suppose that If I had had a guy in the Battalion, I would have waded through all of Robert ECCLESTON'S Indian Wars diaries - tough sledding though, he can be unusually cryptic. With that in mind, we bring the Mariposa Battalion to closure with Eccleston's description of the mustering-out ceremony. Before we do, let's again look at his FIRST Battalion diary entry: "Feb. 12[1851] Wed. "Mustered into service[probably at WHITTIER's Hotel in Agua Fria] at 12 o'clk by Jas. G. BURNEY, Sheriff of Mariposa County by order of a requisition from Gov. McDOUGALL. .About 180 men volunteered, the requistion calling for 200. Jas. D. SAVAGE was elected Major without an opposing candidate or a dissenting voice. After this election, the Battalion marched to Dutch Frank's (LOREMCEISTER) and partook of refreshment eatable & drinkable, after which they marched to the rendezvous about 2 1/2 miles from Town[Buckeye Creek?], where a Surgeon, Comissary, &c. were elected." NOW we rejoin our diarist/Private Robert Eccleston almost five months later: "Tues. July 1st[1851]. ".....About 3 o'clk we were mustered out[again probably at Agua Fria's Whittier Hotel] by the mustering officer Adjt[M.B.] LEWIS. Major[James] BURNEY & many others were present. About 4 oclk we proceeded to partake of Barbacue, which consisted of Roast Beef, any quantity of bread, Cheese & Walnuts, besides drinkables. These were a half barrel of whiskey & a barrel of port wine, a sack of loaf sugar to make the Liquors palatable. The viands were discussed in a manner which spoke well for their qualities. "After dinner was over Major Burney[Sheriff & Battalion paymaster] mounted the Rostrum(an old rickety pantaloon box) & in a clear & pointed speech vindicated himself against the false rumors [Burney orginally declined Battalion command due to pressing sheriff duties -OR ? padded prisoner handling expense accounts:-)] which were in circulation about him. After him Mr.MERRIT [probably my ggf's friend, Samuel A. Merritt - Mariposa's lst County Clerk & later Chief Justice of Utah] spoke & announced himself as candidate again for the legislature, adding what he had done for the Battalion & what he would do should he be re-elected to office. "He was followed by Justice[Richard M.?] DALY who without any exact object in view spoke some time & then finished by saying should be appear as a candidate for ANY office, he hoped we would support him[:-)] Mr WADE said a few words. Mr MALLORD announced himself a candidate for the Legislature & Major Burney spoke a few words in behalf of Squire RUSHER who is also a candidate for the same office, he having to leave the party on account of business. "Judge[John G] MARVIN[Battalion Quartermaster who reportedly wrote the April 23, 1851"Alta California"Yosemite Discovery article - later, Marvin was CA's first Superintendent of Education] made a long & able speech showing in what manner he became attached to the Battalion & under what circumstances he served us till this time, bringing in many laughable antectdotes. He was greatly applauded. Major [James D.] SAVAGE said a few words thanking them for their kindness to him during our service & also complimenting us on our gentlemany deportment. "About sundown the meeting broke up in harmony & good will & thus ended the great COMPACT which called so many together." NOTE: Eccleston's Diaries editor C. Gregory CRAMPTON quoting from the account book, "Expenditures for Military Expeditions Against the Indians of California During the Years 1850-1851-1852," confirms the Battalion's disbandment date of July 1, 1851. He reports the account book shows that our 49er/diarist Private Robert Eccleston, who furnished his own horse, was paid $565 for his battalion services, and $86.67 for his horse, a total of $651.67. According to the account book, the total cost of the Mariposa Battalion was $256,145.37. Nothing stupendous, but I thought it purty intertesting:-) Bob Norris in Dallas <BNorris166aol.com>
