I've inherited a beautiful, carved piece of round marble that was taken from "The Golden Ball" in Sacramento around 1900. Does anyone know about "The Golden Ball?" Was it a hotel or saloon? Any pictures or information would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave Page [email protected]

Here's what I found in "San Francisco 1846-1856 From Hamlet to City", Roger W. Lotchin - 1997 University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago (page 194). After telling of the Vigilantes being formed 1856 it goes on to say "....Before the citizens group disbanded at the end of the summer, its rope was again called into use. One JOSEPH HEATHERINGTON, undeterred by the two previous lychings, shot a Dr. Randall in an affray. He and a convicted murderer named BRACE were hanged." Is BRACE the RICE that was being inquired about??? According to Grace Atherton in _California An Intimate History_ it was a Joseph Hetherington, Englishman, who was hung for murder by the Committee of Vigilance. Rice or Bendixon not mentioned. >From Brian: = = = = = = The lists.rootsweb.com computer, one of RootsWeb's two main list servers, is still down. On Saturday morning we lost a substantial part of the machine's operating system. That meant, in essence, that we were going to have to rebuild the machine's software from scratch. Since we were going to have to reinstall and reconfigure the operating system, it seemed like this was as good of time as any to upgrade the machine's hardware. At this point we have the listserver's hardware upgraded to the extent that the server should be 2-6 times faster than it was. We also have the software recovered to the point where we can log onto the machine in a normal fashion and start configuring the operating system in preparation for a return to normal operations. We expect to begin clearing our queues (we believe we have lost very little if any mail) sometime between Monday and Tuesday evenings, and to be fully back to normal operations by Wednesday evening. We will probably try to process subscribe and unsubscribe requests before processing posts, but things will inevitably come out as sort of a hodge-podge until the queues are cleared. Thanks for your patience while we recover from this disaster, and a special thanks to RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, Donors, and Patrons who have collectively made it possible for us to increase the capacity of the server while we repair the crippled operating system. -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. Hi Joyce, and welcome. You are luck to know the date and place (especially the county) of death for Ben! Without a death certificate or newspaper article is your information from a letter or , bible, or ? A note here for anyone researching Grizzly Flat(s). Gudde_California Gold Camps_ lists a Grizzly Flat in Placer County, one in Plumas County and Grizzly Flat_s_ (also knows as Grizzle Flat) in El Dorado County. There are a total of 15 locations begining with the word Grizzly. The El Dorado County GenWeb Page: http://midtown.net/mirish/eldorado/default.htm Has resources for searching the county along with this vitals information: El Dorado County Recorder-Clerk 360 Fair Lane Placerville, CA 95667 (530) 621-5490 Birth index - 1903 to present Marriage index - 1850 to present Death index - 1903 to present Mining Claims index The Mountain Democrat (oldest surviving newspaper in California-1851) link can also be found on the El Dorado County Page. The Democrat site lists all the newspapers serving the county and the years they were in service. Also there are many historical articles of the gold rush era for you to read online (while Sandra is at the Library looking for your obit:-)))). A search at the USGS site for cemeteries in El Dorado County can be done here: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Have fun, Carolyn Joyce Mason wrote: > > Hello, > I am new to the list and am interested in learning if any > information is available on my ancestor Benjamin Franklin Mason who > drowned at Grizzly Flat, El Dorado County CA on June 9,1858.
