    1. [BYERS-L] Introduction and Request for Help
    2. To All the Byers on this list I need your help. I am trying to find my gr grandfather’s parents and his place of birth. Father was Marion Don Byers born 18 Aug 1901 in Gainesville, Greene Co., AR. He died 4 Oct 1992. He was 1 of 14 children. He was the son of Green Don Byers Jr. and Leila Maria Boykin. Green Don Byers Jr. was born 23 Nov 1863 in Gainesville, Greene Co., AR. He was the only child of Green Don Byers Sr. and Nancy Jane Ellis. The Greene Co., AR 1860 census lists Green Don Byers Sr., as 23 years old, attorney at law and being born in SC. The US Archives gives his CSA Army record. Commissioned Capt. 28 June 1862 by Maj. Gen. Hindman SC, at age 25. Captain in the 25th and later the 30th Arkansas Infantry. Company H of the 30th McNills Reg't and Company D of the 25th. Capt. GREEN D. BYERS, enlisted at Pineville (may have been located between Wittsville/Waldenburg and Harrisburg, near Vanndale) Poinsett County, AR. He helped organize Co H of the 30th Ark Inf. Reg’t. Co H, 5th Reg’t Trans-Mississippi Arkansas Infantry Sept 1862 Co H, Rogans Regiment when killed (known as 30th Reg’t Arkansas Infantry McNills Reg’t 3rd Brigade. From Confederate archives, Ch 1, Vol 109.5, page 174 He was mortally wounded at Helena on 4 July 1863 (Hart’s Reg’t). Captured by Major Gen. B. M. Prentiss at Helena, AR, 4 July 1863. Transported on U.S. Hosp Ship SS R. C. Wood to Officers’ Hosp, Ward G, Memphis, TN. Died in Memphis Hosp 18 Jul 1863. Don’t know where he is buried. Family lore is that 11 brothers came to America from Scotland. No family member can give a year or port of entry. I suspect the name Green is a family name, but don’t know. I will forever be in your debt if you can help me or point me in the right direction. I am sorry this is so long. Phil Di Matteo
