Hi Roberta ... We're kind of stuck right now. Can't go forward or backward from David BEATTIE, a shepherd, who we think would likely have been born in the mid to late 1880's ... married to Mary BYERS, possibly in Carlisle, in the between 1900 and 1906, became a widower sometime after the birth of their third of three sons (all born in Carlisle), possibly between 1911 and 1915 ... remarried circa 1915 and placed the three first sons in an orphanage, likely Quarriers at Bridge of Weir near Glasgow. We suspect, but haven't proven, that there may have been a second family. When we look at the names of middle son Thomas Leslie BEATTIE's children ... Marion Margaret, David Joseph, Gloria Hazel, Linda Mary Jane, John Robert Thomas, Timothy Trent ... we see some historial patterns of names that seem tied to BEATTIE. But, as yet, have made no discoveries that would bear this out. Your Jane and her brother Thomas are a good example. I have been contacted by some people in Ontario that have BEATTIE ancestors but we haven't established any connection yet. They may connect to you, though. Perhaps you've already been in touch with them. If not, e-mail me back and I'll look through my records for their addresses. Shane Oxley, a lister, has just this morning sent me some 1881 census information on BEATTIE/BYERS in the borders area. There are a significant number of BEATTIEs and BYERS. I haven't had time to really look at it carefully. Believe our David BEATTIE may not show up until the 1891 census ... possibly as a preschooler. Believe his father would either be Robert or James because those were the names given to his first son. If you would like Shane's material ... just e-mail me. Believe she posted it to the [email protected] list. This long response is my way of thinking out loud ... if we find a connection to your Jane/Thomas BEATTIE, will let you know. In the meantime, it's a quandary! My husband's great grandmother is Jane Beattie b. 1818 and she came from Scotland to Canada. She married a John Crawford. She had a brother named Thomas Beattie, b. March 24, 1816 The family came to Ontario. I don't have a lot on them and the time frame is earlier than your Thomas but they might connect back some where.
