Here are my Arkansas Byers: Descendants of King David Byers Generation No. 1 1. KING DAVID1 BYERS1 was born 1809 in Ohio. He married CATHERINE POLLY FREEMAN1 in Arkansas, daughter of LEWIS FREEMAN and PRESHA. Notes for KING DAVID BYERS: Census Record 100001-10001 Anderson County, Tennesse 1840 has Byers spelled Byars. They moved from Union County, Georgia to Arkansas about 1868 in an ox cart caravan. The move took some six months because they stopped along the way to work. Several family members returned to GA before moving back to Arkansas and settling "on old Boston Mountain" with terrain similar to Union County, Georgia. Notes for KING DAVID BYERS: King David was one of 9 children. (Betty Loveland) At the start of the Civil War, King David attempted to join the Confederate Army but was unsuccessful because he was too young. He then enrolled in the Union. According to "Tennesseans in the Civil War, Part 2", King David Byers was a private in Company H of the Third Mounted Infantry. Both your information and this could be right, as soldiers sometimes changed regiments during the war. But my guess is that only one of these is right. Why? ... Both of these regiments, according to "Tennesseans in the Civil War, Part 1", were mustered in in the fall of 1864, fairly late in the war. The Fifth Regiment was organizes in Cleveland, Tennessee, while the Third was organized at Loudon, Strawberry Plains, and Knoxville. Company I of the Fifth included men from Bradley and Roane Counties, while Company H of the Third included men from Monroe County. Perhaps, if you know where your gggrandfather lived, this could shed some light on the correct (?) unit. "Tennesseans" has very little information on any battles these units may have served in. Mark Lacy, [email protected], www.iac.net/~lacy/AJLacy/ 5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment USA. Captain William L.Webster was in charge of Company I, which was mustered Feb 1,1865. Enrolled at Cleveland, Kingston, and Calhoun. Men from Bradley and Roane Counties. "Dyer's Compendium" states the regiment did garrison duty at Dalton and Marietta, Georgia; was engaged in a skirmish at McClemore's Cove, Georgia, Feb 1, 1865; was on an expedition from Dalton to Coosawattie River and Spring Place, Georgia, April 1-4, 1865; was mustered out July 17,1865. "Tennesseans In The Civil War" has King David Byers, Pvt. H Company 3rd MI. 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment USA. Organized at Loudon, Strawberry Plains, and Knoxville, in fall of 1864. Captain Joseph C. Gray was in charge of H Company. H Company enrolled at Madisonville, Monroe Couny, Sept-Oct 1864. Mustered at Knoxville, Nov 30,1864, and Loudon, Dec 2,1864. The report of Adjutant General J.P.Brownlow, State of Tennessee, dated Mar 1,1866, stated this was a three-months organization, and did no service, never being fully organized. "Dyer's Compendium" mentions a skirmish at Lee's Ferry on Sept 6, and at Greeneville, on Oct 12,1864. No reference to the regiment was found in the "Official Records".
