I think about the 1600's or 1500's bye the invasion of the Viking period .. as they made settlements along the lower area of Scotland from what I remember of my history... From my research in Rowan CO., N.C. I have ran into the Byer residing there about 1750's... the spelling varies also ... but I also no that there were Germans settlers in the region coming down from Pennsylvania to settle there in Rowan Co.. I gleam the name out of works of Jo Lynn White who has published many reference material for Rowan County... over the years... Jerry byers in Kansas

Based on the 1860 Greene Co., AR census he was born in SC about 1837. G. D. had one son born after G. D. died. G. D. was a Capt. in the CSA army. He was shot on 4 July 1863 and died from the wounds 18 July 1863 in a Union hospital in Memphis. We can't find where he was buried. We don't know where in SC he was born (although we have heard York Co mentioned) or who his parents were. I have tried York Co and SC in general with no feed back. I suspect his mother's name was Green. I went to the Green list for help. Again, no feed back. So I am trying this list again. Any help will be appreciated. Phil Di Matteo

    3. Hi Roberta ... We're kind of stuck right now. Can't go forward or backward from David BEATTIE, a shepherd, who we think would likely have been born in the mid to late 1880's ... married to Mary BYERS, possibly in Carlisle, in the between 1900 and 1906, became a widower sometime after the birth of their third of three sons (all born in Carlisle), possibly between 1911 and 1915 ... remarried circa 1915 and placed the three first sons in an orphanage, likely Quarriers at Bridge of Weir near Glasgow. We suspect, but haven't proven, that there may have been a second family. When we look at the names of middle son Thomas Leslie BEATTIE's children ... Marion Margaret, David Joseph, Gloria Hazel, Linda Mary Jane, John Robert Thomas, Timothy Trent ... we see some historial patterns of names that seem tied to BEATTIE. But, as yet, have made no discoveries that would bear this out. Your Jane and her brother Thomas are a good example. I have been contacted by some people in Ontario that have BEATTIE ancestors but we haven't established any connection yet. They may connect to you, though. Perhaps you've already been in touch with them. If not, e-mail me back and I'll look through my records for their addresses. Shane Oxley, a lister, has just this morning sent me some 1881 census information on BEATTIE/BYERS in the borders area. There are a significant number of BEATTIEs and BYERS. I haven't had time to really look at it carefully. Believe our David BEATTIE may not show up until the 1891 census ... possibly as a preschooler. Believe his father would either be Robert or James because those were the names given to his first son. If you would like Shane's material ... just e-mail me. Believe she posted it to the [email protected] list. This long response is my way of thinking out loud ... if we find a connection to your Jane/Thomas BEATTIE, will let you know. In the meantime, it's a quandary! 3. I found this little bio in Goodspeed's 1885 "History of Pike and Dubois Counties, Indiana". Hope it helps someone. Page 387: Alexander Byers, M.D., of Petersburg, Ind., is one of a large family of children born to the marriage of Thomas and Margaret (Hamilton) Byers, who were natives of Pennsylvania, where they lived and died. Alexander was born in Washington County, Penn., June 15,1829. At the age of fifteen he entered the West Alexander Academy, and completed his course when he was twenty. He then taught school for about a year in Ohio, and also began the study of medicine. He came to Indiana in 1851, and soon after located in Clark County, where he taught school two years. He then came to Petersburg, and taught school for about seven months, and shortly after entered the office of Prof. J. R. Wilcox, M. D., of Evansville, Ind., and also attended lectures at the medical college of that city. He practiced medicine with his preceptor for about three months, when the latter died, and our subject returned to Petersburg in September, 1854. In 1861 he was commissioned first-lieutenant of Company I, Forty-second Indiana Volunteers, and served in that capacity in the war of the Rebellion for about eight months. In August , 1862, he was appointed first assistant-surgeon of the Sixty-fifth Indiana Regiment, and in 1863 was appointed surgeon of the regiment, serving until March, when he returned home and resumed his practice. In 1856 he married Mary Morgan, who died in July 1858, leaving one child, Mary V. In November, 1866, he married Mary F. Hammond. They have six children: Harry W., Anna M., Perry H., John A., Oliver A., and Ethel May. Mr. Byers is a Republican, and a member of the I. O. O. F., also of the Tri-Stae, Indiana State and Pike County Medical Societies. He and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
