An article published by the Washington County (Virginia) Historical Society mentions the Byars family of Pennsylvania: "According to the memoirs of Congressman John Rhea, copies of which are in possession of Rhea Anderson of Blountville, Tenn., the Dysart, the Rhea and the Byars families were related in Scotland and Ireland. When Rev. Joseph Rhea, cousin of Col. Dysart, came to America in 1769 - I quote from the memoirs of Congressman John Rhea - 'He determined to pass over to America. Having prepared for the same, he bid farewell to his connections and friends, and with his wife and seven children, the youngest two years old, he embarked on the Brig, Capt. Paul, commander, bound for Philadelphia, and on September 27, 1769, the Brig hove up anchor and sailed.' 'After a long passage the Brig arrived in the Delaware River, and came safe to Philadelphia, previous to the freezing of winter, all in good health, and Fanny Dysart, one of the family, was with them.' 'In Philadelphia they lived with Mathew Byars, a relation of Joseph Rhea. Byars invited him and his family to his home.' 'They went to his hourse and stayed there while they tarried in Philadelphia.' Going through some old things I had in the attic yesterday, I came across a old photo. On the back is written " Mr. & Mrs. W. W. Byers, owners and operators of Byers Hotel. Hotel burned April 14, 1911." It is the picture of a man with a beard and his wife. The picture is in bad shape but likely could be restored. I know if it was my family, I would want it. I used to by things at auctions and that is likely how it came to be in my possession. I would like to get it to family. I have scanned it and can email copies, it is about 700 KB. I can send it to someone for $1.00 postage, or I could put it on a website that posts lost pictures, I would need an address. I would like to see it get to as many family members as possible. I joined for this purpose, I will get off here in just a few days. Later, Pat in Southeast Kansas.

I am looking for information on Bayliss Byers sometimes spelled Bayless. He married Martha "Mattie" Hollingshad Davis (widow of James Davis). They married in West Plains, MO and had a daughter, Annie Byers born July 1886. There was much termoil in young Annie's life and I have not been able to find out what happened to her, whether she married etc. I have a picture of her and saw her name with her mother, step father, and step sisters in the 1900 census from there she disappears. Any info you might have would be most appreciated. Thanks Karen in Massachusetts ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! >From the Western Sun newspaper of Vincennes, Indiana, February 1885: Mr. John Byars, an octogenarian of Washington township, has an old fashioned clock which is said to be over a hundred years old, and it still keeps good time. His grandfather brought it to this county in 1830 from Virginia. Two of them cost a hundred dollars each. Mr. Byars says that he has read the bible through seven times. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hi Penny, Our BYERS appear to have been born in northern England. We have a Mary BYERS BEATTIE born circa 1885, married in Carlisle in 1907 to a shepherd, David BEATTIE (b1872, d 1914). Mary BYERS BEATTIE had three sons (Robert James b 1907; Thomas Leslie b 1909; John David b 1911) and died sometime between 1915 and 1926 in Carlisle we think. She had a brother William S. BYERS who was alive in 1926 and lived at Sparrow Rigg, Woodhouses. That's the extent of what we know so far. Mary BYERS BEATTIE was my husband's grandmother. BYERS is an English and Scottish place name for the man who lived by a cattleshed, from Old English byre = cattleshed, or as a place name for the man who hailed from a so-named location such as Byers Green (County Durham), or Byers (near Edinburgh). BYRES, BIERS are variations. Good luck with your search. Hello Listers, We have just learned today from Quarriers Bridge of Weir that the three BEATTIE brothers we are trying to find family for were not placed in Quarriers. Now that we have that information, we wonder whether the family lore about them being placed in "an orphanage" in Glasgow is correct. Their place of birth (Carlisle) and baptism in St. Cuthberts (Robert James b 1907; Thomas Leslie b.1909; John David born 1911) suggests that when their mother, Mary BYERS BEATTIE, died circa 1915, they may have been placed in an orphanage nearer to Carlisle. Their father David BEATTIE, a shepherd, is said to have remarried and it is also said the second wife did not want to raise the three boys. To us that suggests there may have later been a second family. We are now wondering whether the Salvation Army would have run an orphanage in/near Carlisle circa 1915? We know Thomas Leslie BEATTIE came to Canada as a home child under the auspices of the Salvation Army in 1926. He lost touch with his brothers and we know the Salvation Army helped reconnect with them in about 1950 because they talk about the help received in their letters. We know Thomas Leslie BEATTIE had an uncle William S. BYERS because he is listed as the 'nearest relative' on immigration papers. William S. BYERS address was Sparrow Rigg, Woodhouses, Carlisle. Thomas Leslie BEATTIE's last address in England before he came to Canada from Liverpool was Bousfield, also just outside Carlisle. Does anyone in the locale or anyone having done more research know of any orphanages in the Carlisle area, circa 1915-1924?? I'm going to search for a Salvation Army website to see if I can get an answer from them. The more I think about it, the more I wonder about trekking three little kids all the way to Glasgow to give them up?? If there wasn't the wherewithal to raise them, there probably wasn't enough cash to take them on such a long journey to place them. Besides I now wonder why, if the family lived on the England side of the border, they would take the children into Scotland to place them in the orphanage?? My apologies for being so long-winded. We really appreciate the kind assistance we have received so far and will be glad of any advice about how to proceed.
