I also followed a couple of Byers indian lines from OK from the early 1900's all the way back to NC during the 1700's it got kind of complicated though. I do know that the last one I had found married an indian women who could not read, right or speak english. It went from NC thru TN and the lines then went to OK. There are a bunch of Indians in OK with the last name of Byers. So many that I gave up and stoped looking. They all came from the Byers and the indian woman married in NC. That is just the Ok Byers though. I do not know about the rest. I would love to see what you have though. The research is very interesting to go through no matter what you find. The main reason I am hooked on the Bumgarner, Byers theory I suppose is because they were next door neighbors or their property connected before the line was moved. William Byers sued John Bumgarner stating that Moses Bumgarner was the father of Margaret Peggy Byers son which her parents Willliam and his wife Jane raised as their son. I also would like to go to NC. We may never find out what really happened.

I also looked at the census records for Moses. 1840 lists his age as 50-60, 1850 lists his age as 58 in the month of September and 1860 lists his age as 69 in the month of July. None of these ages matches either birth date that we all have. I can send you a transcribed copy of the will for Joseph Houston if you like. Peggy was his second wife. She received nothing upon his death as far as I recall. Somewhere around here I have a copy of Deanna Thompson's transcription of the bastardly bond. Let me know if you would like me to send you a scanned copy of the email of this information. I probably have John Baumgarner and the Byers guy mixed up. However, I still won't buy this as the family until I can finish all the research in both TN and NC. By the way, there are a whole bunch of Baumgarner's on the Indian Rolls! I wonder where they came from? I show mutltiple deeds for Moses in Tennessee in Jackson County. I have a few transcribed copies if you would like to see them. I'm glad to see you have so much information. Thank you for sharing it.

I have never seen anything suggesting otherwise and am wondering who you obtained that information from? Bastardly bonds were the counties attempt to prevent having to support illegimate children. I do not know how many of these children were indentured once there was a hearing and payment was made to the unwed mother. What I am saying is that someone needs to go through the Lincoln County records beyond that bond and see if the child was indentured. I have seen two birth dates for Moses, one in March of 1790 and the second in November of 1790. His age in census records never matches the March date. He lists his birth place as NC. In the year he was born middle Tennessee was considered the state of NC. So, was he born in NC or Tennessee? Does he really know where he was born? Some really didn't know if their parents died when they were young. Has anyone thought he may be Indian? I have heard he looks like he is in photos which were at one time circulated in TN. Three (I said two earlier and I was wrong) of his children married people of native american descent. So, should I assume early Tennessee was over run with native american's that everyone married or should I assume we may be part native american and do not know it? If we are Native American, there will be no records prior to living in the state of Tennessee. Of his children Alexander Byers married first Leitha Grimes. Leitha has Cherokee in her backround. William Jasper Byers married Marlisa Bradford whose Cherokee name is listed in his family bible. I have not been able to get a copy of this from his descendent Danette Oliver. Last but not least, Amanda Byers Kinslow's entire line appears to be native american. It is rumored her older children's families had whisperings of being native american and their half siblings of James Kinslows second marriage are tribal members today. I am not suggesting anything at this point, I am just saying that none of this has been well enough researched to prove anything. Maybe Moses Byers is that illegimate child, I am not willing to rule that out, however I will not buy it until the research is complete. I am hoping by following his children's lines out that I will gain more information as I go. Hopefully the Florence H. Byers that Osborn Byers adopted was a relative that we can trace back to the Byers family we really belong to. But I won't hold my breath looking for an easy answer, because I do not think there is one.

Her parents did. Let me know if this is incorrect.

Bastardly children were not allowed to reside with their mothers and were usually removed from the home and placed with another family until adulthood to learn a trade. Also, Margaret Byers married a man by the name of Houston and if in fact she is the mother of Moses, then there should be a connection somewhere to be found. Her son Christopher Houston moved to Jackson County for a time before moving elsewhere. If he had any deeds, I would like to see who signed off on them as it was usually family. There are two birth dates for Moses and one is the same as the child from Lincoln County, the other is for someone else. The family bible pages for this family was written by two different people, so were the dates correct? If you add to this that the Amanda Byers Kinslow line is of Native American descent then I have a little problem with the whole thing. I'm not sure where the Native American blood is coming from completely but I suspect from the Kinslow side. Two of Moses Byers children married people of Native American descent. I find that rather interesting. I do not believe we have really answered the question of who was the real Moses Byers. I wish I could go to NC and research, I'm pretty sure the answer is there. As far as Tabitha Rosina Harris goes, her second marriage was to a Joseph Edmundson. They had a daughter named Edna born more than likely in Roseclair, Hardin County, Illinois. She was 2 months old in the 1880 census. I have not been able to find Rosina after this census, that is why I wondered where she died. Anyways, I can't wait to see your web site when you get home. I'm glad we got to touch base. Lori
