Eliza Byers (1837-1909) was my great grandmother, she married James Ritchie (1835-1911) in 1864. The Byers family to the best of my knowledge were located in Gloucester Twp for a few years in the early 1830s, and later moved to Bromley Twp, Renfrew County, where they had a farm on the Bonnechere River. I have some information on Eliza's brother William and his family, as well as other Byers families in the Ottawa valley.

James married 2) Margaret Sadler and they resided in Bromley Twp, Renfrew County. James and Jane had 3, possibly 4 children: Rachel, Eliza and William. Robert was the 4th child of James - uncertain as to which wife he was born to. I am a descendant of Eliza Byers (1837-1909). James had a brother William Byers (1810-1885), who was a large scale lumberman but he was a bachelor until late in life when he married Mary Porter in 1857. They did not have any children that I am aware of, and none were mentioned in his obituary. Were your husbands great grandparents Robert Byers and Jane Anderson (1828-1912)? If so, do you have a birthdate for this Robert?

I have an Albert Byers b. in Iowa in Sept. 1880. I don't know where he went after that, but his older brother John R. Byers was in Lincoln Co. OK in the 1910 census. That in itself might be nothing, but all the rest of that family remained in Iowa. I'm trying to track John R. Byers and can't figure out why he was in Oklahoma. He had a daughter who was born in "Old Mexico" in 1907 and then the family moved back to the Midwest. Perhaps Albert came to join him and stayed? Nothing concrete, but a possibility, I suppose. In this research it states that Moses was born abt 1780. So it probably it not accurate or precise. I think most of this research focused on John Bumgarner and I do not think the exact dates were listed for some of the children. I have 1774 for Moses Bumgarner and 1790 for Moses Byers. I will have to check but I think I got that out of the Byers Family Bible. Elizabeth Cooke applied for a widows pension and I may have gotten it out of that. I will check.

There were two John Bumgarner's and maybe three. Moses Byers was born in 1790 Moses Bumgarner was born in 1774 John Bumgarner was born in 1754 Peter Bumgarner was born in 1715. He could have been the uncle though. Margaret Peggy Byers was born in 1770/1772? She would have been a few years older than Moses Bumgarner when he fathered Moses Byers. Moses Bumgarner would have been 16 or seventeen years of age which might be why they didn't get married. Moses Bungarner would have married Charity Ichard in 1798. Which is eight years after Moses Byers was born.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UFH.2ACEB/444.1.1.1.2.1.2.2 Message Board Post: This I believe is why I was thinking he had married an Nancy Prior to the Nancy Rockett. The marriage bond for Nancy Rockett is after most of the children were already born. There has not been a bond for the first Nancy. I do not think any of if is certain though. The earliest record found in NC for John Bumgarner are the deed transactions in Mecklenburg Co., one dated December 21, 1762 and another one dated November 16, 1764 for 150 acres. This land was located on Leepers Creek. A number of years separate the date of the deeds found in Mecklenburg Co. from the one dated May 15, 1772, for 600 acres found in Tryon Co for John Bumgarner's deed also on Leepers Creek. Research has not definitely established a relationship between Peter and John, but since they lived in the same vicinity, it is believed that they were related, possibly as father and son or uncle and nephew. We do know that Peter was in NC at an early date, and we do not find a record of John in NC until 1762. There is a possibility that John in NC is the son of John whose will was made in Augusta Co, VA in 1751. Since no probate was found, it is not certain that John died in 1751. But that is the date of his will and the will does name a son named John. In reviewing the records of Augusta Co., Va. we see the John, Jr. heir of John Bumgardner, deceased, sold his property in February 1757, so we do know that his father was dead by this date, and since Peter was in NC prior to this date, there is a possibility that John came on to NC since Peter was there. Further evidence found later, states that John, Jr. died in VA. We know that John and Nancy, were in fact, married; but, no marriage bond has been found; so we do no know the date of matrimony, her birth, death or burial place. So far a tombstone for John has not been found, but we do know that his will was filed in 1819 and probated in 1820 in Licoln Co. John and Nancy had at least 56 grandchildren. Other research has shown that John was born 1754 and died 1819 and Nancy Rockett waas born 1755 and died 1835.
