Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/QJH.2ACIB/240 Message Board Post: My sentiments exactly! These boards have classifications for a reason! When we post our information or answer queries our information has less value if we can't site our source. And unverified information is, in my opinion- just a lead. Something to follow up. But it is nice to know up front whether we are chasing down a lead or following a path well travelled. So to all you Byars - lets post our information and say where we got it! And one other thing- (since I'm on a roll! ) Not all of the Byars lived in the U.S. Some of us (descendants) are in Canada and elsewhere. The abreviations are sometimes confusing- can we try to post the whole location? ie: Small town/township, County, State/Province & Country. (My bunch landed in: Bidwell Township, Algoma, Ontario, Canada for instance. ) So, post what you have! Often! Lynn G. - Byars List and Board Admin. P.S. Happy Mothers Day. (certainly a genealogical holiday!)

Find information. Fit it in with previously collected information. Check for validity. Find more information. None of what we find appears spontaineously (I hope). You found information on James BYARS. WHERE? THAT is the documentation. Right now, all I can say is that Lloyd said that James BYARS.... Now, that you told me is one form of documentation. But difficult for others to verify, espically after one or the other of us dies. Information like (and this is just made up, not true): Lawrence County, AL, Land Deed Records, book 19, page 13-14; would be information anyone, at any time, could find, confirm and redocument. Lloyd found that information. Where? The next time I'm in Lawrence County doing research, I could eaisly find that record and read it myself --- and discover that the witness, someone of little or no interest to Lloyd, just happens to be the husband of my 6x great aunt. Unless I can find the original record, I would never discover such a thing. So I return to my original question. How do I politely request the documentation for information found here? It needn't be anything elaborate. Lots of my information documentation reads something like, "Memory of Lillian BYARS. Interview 26Jan1982 by S. BYARS". To me, information without documentation is just gossip. Valuable gossip maybe, but difficult to find and difficult to duplicate gossip. STEVE BYARS.
Looking for any information and contacts regarding Elijah Byars, b. about 1798 in Virginia, possibly Halifax County. He married Martha Bradley, b. abt. 1820 also in Virginia. The family later moved to Missouri between 1829 and 1833. I have other descendant information, but nothing more regarding Elijah. Thanks, --Mike

You may document will & etc. I have never put anything on line but may have given someone what I have right or wrong. I don't know what or whom you are referring to. My research has been picked up by bits & pieces. I see a lot of infro that I don't agree with but I do not tell that person they are wrong. Just this morning I found on Line where James Byars (which James) sold 300 acres of land to a Alexander Coulter in N. C. dated 26, July 1774. I will be glad to share what I have, right or wrong. It would be a place to start. One can always change the infro. LLOYD

I do not know where else to find an answer, so I'll risk irritating someone. I find much of interest in the postings. What I do not find is any documentation. I don't know how to avoid endless errata and msgs trying to keep track of the new (to me) data I see here. I do not, personally, accept a simple e-mail msg as a "source". To me, e-mail is rather a convient way of talking with other researchers. The conversations themselves do not provide what I consider adequate or "proper" documentation. I have been given "proof" that my father, Raymond Burnaman BYARS, died in WWII --- two years before my birth... which leaves my four younger siblings wondering who that man sharing my mothers bedroom was. In any case, what is the proper/accepted manner here to request documentation of given facts? For instance I find Lloyd's information about James Henry BYARS' (my sixth great grandfather) second wife very interesting, but cannot appropriately add the material to my database without documentation. Might it not be beneficial to post sources with the material in the first place? Thanks for any help with this, Steve Byars
