My surname is Butterley, in researching my family history I have discovered a number Butterley variants viz: Buttery/Butterie/Buttrie/Buttrye/Butterye/Butterbie etc Does anyone have any information on where the name originated from, and also where in the UK it was most prominent particularly in the1500's and 1600's.
