Hi Peter and listers Thanks for the warm welcome to your site. I'm researching any (Mac)GILCHRIST'S in the Bute area. The earliest one I know of was JOHN GILCHRIST who had 4 sons I think (I don't know of any daughters): William, Donald, Robert and Patrick. William's son Donald purchased or built the House of Northbarr near Glasgow in 1676. The earlier Donald was a sheriff depute, notary and chief clerk of Buteshire. He married Elizabeth Boyd and had 2 sons that I know of: Donald and John. Donald was a Notary Public and Town Clerk at Rothsay in the mid 1600's. He married Phinguel Stewart. John was a sheriff clerk of Bute in the 1630's and Town Clerk of Rothsay in 1649. He was also a Notary. I don't have any information about Robert or Patrick. I'd love to learn any more about this family or any other Gilchrist's from Bute. Are there any on-lines sites that would give me more info? Regards Lori Australia
