This may have referred to a refusal to tithe to the church the required money - sheep. Apparently, the name MacCaw (Scottish version) became McCaw when they moved to Ireland and changed from the Catholic religion to Protestant religion. Im told of people insisting that two small lines be written under the small "c". The earlies recorded McCaw in my history is a Alexander McCaw of Craig Townland, Ireland. (1669) The next is John McCaw , the younger, (1776) and then Duncan McCaw b. May 1780. Duncan was a Church warden and is buried in the Ballintoy Churchyard. He died around 1857.
