I'm a new member of this list, and thought I would just post here my current interests in Bute. Most of my connections are in Kintyre, Argyll, and there was much 19th century travel between the two areas. However, my current research is concentrated on the family of an Elizabeth HAMILTON (about 1811 - ?) from Arran who married a seaman and coastguard named Neil GALBRAITH (1812 - before 1859) from Campbeltown. By 1835, Neil and Elizabeth were in the coastguard station near Sandwich, Kent, England, where they had a daughter named Flora. Neil was later dismissed from the service, and in 1841 we find his wife and children back in Arran as follows: Piece: SCT1841/553 Place: Kilbride & Lochranza-Bute Enumeration District: 5 Civil Parish: Kilbride Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -Folio: 5 Page: 15 Address: Lamlash Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks GALBRAITH Elizabeth F 30 Housekeeper Bute GALBRAITH John M 7 (Son) Bute GALBRAITH Flora F 5 (Daughter) Bute [actually Kent, England] HAMILTON Margt F 25 (Sister) Bute There was no trace of Neil GALBRAITH - and indeed I have found no trace of him after 1835. My questions are as follows: Does anyone know who this Elizabeth HAMILTON might be? I have no knowledge of her parents, but perhaps the listing here of a sister Margaret who is about five years younger might help to separate her from the many other people of this name. Does anyone have access to the 1851 and/or 1861 census who could check if the family are still in the same location. (I would not expect anyone to check through the whole census!) Does anyone have access to post 1855-graveyard listings where I might find anything more about Elizabeth? She died some time after her daughter's marriage in Dunoon, Argyll in 1858. Thanks in advance for any help. If a member of this list should be relate to Elizabeth, I can exchange information about her many descendants. Regards Sarah Galbraith Cheshire
