Hi June, I have a map of the North end of the island of Arran and would gladly send you a copy of it snail mail. I think it would answer all your place name questions. Please contact me off list. My great, great, great, great grandfather, Archibald McKillop was schoolmaster at Lochranza and all his children were born in the schoolhouse. These children later left for Inverness, Megantic, Quebec, Canada in 1831. The school house is located right next door to St. Brides Church. Now to join in on the dinner with an ancestor topic ..... I agree that more might be gained by talking to one of the woman folk. Archibald McKillop, schoolmaster, married Catherine McKillop, granddaughter of Daniel McKillop, tacksman at Cock, and Flora Currie. Gravestone inscriptions at St. Brides Church say that Daniel died 1797, age 67 (b.1730) and Flora died 1797, age 78 (b.1719). One question I would ask is whether the gravestone marker was correct in that Daniel was 11 years younger than she was and was a father at age 16 when his son Angus was born. I am curious about what circumstances would have enabled Daniel to support a wife and children at such a young age. Flora would have lived to see the "good times" and the bad and would have so many stories to tell about the people and times on the North end of the island. I have taken on the study of the genealogy of all the Arran McKillops and no doubt she would be a wonderful source of information on that topic. I consider myself lucky in being able to get my own family back to Daniel but I still wonder about who his father was. Most of the McKillops were located on the North end of the island from Corrie to Lochranza but there was a McKillop family in the early 1700s on the southend. I have wondered if there is any connection to the McKillops or McGilps of Knapdale where the name "Angus McKillop" is prevalent in the OPRs. I wish Flora was here to talk to.
