NB forwarding this type of message direct to the list is NOT the way to advise of possible Viruses on RootsWeb Lists. If you receive such postings, send a copy to the list owner at [email protected] For this list, you use ButeshireGenWeb in place of LISTNAME. The list owner (me in this case) then checks their sources, and advises the list in a straightforward unemotional way if there is cause for concern. Messages purporting to come from IBM or Microsoft are almost certainly hoaxes - neither of these companies use broadcast e-mail for this purpose. The "virus" if you like is the unwanted propagation of the message to all and sundry in an emotive way which causes unnecessary upset and concern. Remember you cannot get a virus from a RootsWeb list message, as RootsWeb strips off all attachments before forwarding the messages. Yes, some people get the Digest as a series of attachments, but these are all e-mail messages only. You can of course receive e-mails with attachments in your non list mail, and this is where you need to observe the Golden Rules for Virus Protection. These are: 1 DO NOT open unsolicited attachments. when in doubt, delete the e-mail, and write to the sender asking them to send again (if possible not as an attachment). 2 Invest in and install a recognised Anti Virus program. 3 Keep the package up to date - most program vendors offer an annual subscription and on-line update service. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items.
