Seeking information on the Rev. Colin Lindsay (c 1744-1817) of Arran. He was a Presbyterian minister who was ordained in Ireland in 1779. He served the congregation of Dundalk until 1785. About 1790 he immigrated to North Carolina where he pastored a number of Presbyterian Churches in the Cape Fear area. He was married to Elizabeth Hamilton. I have located an IGI entry for a marriage on 25 February 1767 between Colin Lindsay and Bethia Hamilton in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Perhaps "Bethia" is a nickname for the given name "Elizabeth". If so this could be a record of the marriage between Rev. Colin Lindsay and Elizabeth Hamilton. I am also seeking information on the Lindsay family of Scotland in general. About 1786 a Mary Ellen (Nelly, Helen) Lindsay (c 1761-after 1820) married James Torry (c 1745-c 1816) in Glasgow, Scotland. This James Torry had immigrated to Cumberland County, North Carolina c 1770 and was a loyalist during the American Revolution. He had a wife (a Miss Hamilton) and three children who he had to abandon (after the Battle or Moore's Creek Bridge in North Carolina--February 1776) while he was serving in the Commissary Department as support for British troops. His wife died during the war. About 1785 he returned to England/Scotland where he remarried Mary Ellen Lindsay as noted above. They returned to Cumberland County, North Carolina c 1790--the same year that Rev. Colin Lindsay is said to have come to North Carolina. Is there a relationship between Colin Lindsay and Mary Ellen Lindsay? Any information on these individuals or the Torry family will be greatly appreciated.
