    1. Bute around the world
    2. Hello everyone, As someone whose ancestors tended to stay in Scotland (and who had their own struggles, successes and failures:-) I am nevertheless intrigued by the people who struck out and made a new life overseas. So I wonder about place names which were given the ring of home. I know, for example, that there is a Rothesay in New Brunswick, Canada, and a Rothesay Bay in New Zealand. Does anyone know the stories behind these? What are the other examples of Buteshire names around the world? Looking at early copies of The Buteman newspaper I came across an 1869 report (February 6) of natives of Bute in Australia gathering at Wombat Hill, Daleysford, to celebrate the coming of age of the Marquess of Bute. John Jamieson, of Mountstuart Farm, Franklingford, "late tenant of Scalpsie Farm, Bute" proposed the health of the Provost, magistrates and councillors of Rothesay. It was the end of the day and I didn't have time to make more notes, but I was struck by how emigrants named their farms after places at home (eg Mountstuart) and also by the fact that they still felt loyalty to the Bute family and Rothesay, Madeleine Wales
