    3. I was going to welcome to June Blackhall who joined this week, but she left almost immediately without posting anything. Que sera sera. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Finally found time to visit the old maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ I was initially puzzled by not finding a direct link under the B counties for BUTE, but on looking wider found the right entry at "ARGYLL & BUTE" in the A counties box. This links to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/index.htm which is effectively the 'A' places Index page - if you know the starting letter of your place name just add it as in the following examples : Brodick, Arran http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/indexB.htm Millport, Cumbrae http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/indexM.htm Rothesay, Bute http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/indexR.htm I liked the way the links from the place index opened a separate window, so that when finished with one area, it was easy to return to the index simply by closing the map window. Note also that some of the larger towns do not always appear centrally on the maps from these links - for both Millport and Rothesay, one needs to move to the next map South to display the centre of the town. I also found it useful to work out the grid : m n o p i j k l e f g h a b c d in order to move diagonally when following roads out of my places of interest, simply by changing the address line and clicking enter. The next thing was to work out the major grid. For ARGYLL & BUTE it appears to be 5 wide, so for Arran, Brodick which happens to be at the bottom right of a main page at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/fs_55244001d.htm , the next south is ...55249001p, east is ...55245001a and south east is ...55250001m If you haven't tried this site, I recommend that you do, however keep an eye on the clock, as it can be addictive as one follows around the various places that ones ancestors lived ! ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items.
