There have been a considerable number of families of Buteshire that have anglicised their surnames, especially between the mid 1700s and the early 1800s. Examples are McGilcherran to Sharp and McConnechy to Duncan. I wonder if anyone knows why this was done in the first place and secondly, how the new names were chosen. It must have been more than to distinguish different branches of larger families??? Bill
