    1. McIlwraith/McMeeken/Macbeth/Dick/Thom
    2. My GGfather Hugh McIlwraith married a Mary McMeeken in 1878. Mary McMeeken was born in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire around 1845. Her Father, William (wife Mary Drynan), was born at Poundland, Colmonell in 1821 and his father, James McMeeken (wife Margaret Lawson from Ballymoney), was a joiner at Poundland. There were McIlwraiths farming at Poundland around this time. What I am trying to establish is whether the Hugh McIlwraith who married the Mary McMeeken were both originating from Colmonell or whether he was from Dailly - my cousin (a McIlwraith) recollects that the brother (Alexander) of GGF Hugh had come from Dailly. Certainly the sequence of family names would point to Dailly as having been Hugh Mcilwraith's place of birth but I need some link between Hugh's marriage in 1878 and his birthplace. My whole family on the McIlwraith/McMeeken side were Reformed Presbyterians. Would this make a difference to the amount of local records available? Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated. This family linked up with Macbeths from Rothesay in 1910 or so and I have records covering Dunns, Dunlops, Montgomery's (Ayrshire) and Thoms, Gillies, Dicks, (Rothesay). Anyone interested, please let me know and I will post details. Regards Alistair.

December 1797 James MCKINLAY seaman, son of James MCKINLAY, shoremaster in Rothesay and Cathrine CLARK daughter to the deceased John CLARK, sometime cottar in Shalunt. Booked the 18th and married the 25th. 5 children of the above John, c.14.10.1798 James and Ninian c.15.12.1799 Elizabeth c.17.6.1804 Margaret c.30.8.1801 Births Charlotte, daughter of Alexander TAYLOR seaman in Rothesay and Mary BROWN was born 27th inst. [1784] baptised 2nd January 1785. Also found a CLERK which is probably wise to keep in mind considering the spelling variations which are common. There are a couple of John TAYLOR/Isabella CLARK marriages on the LDS site which may be worth looking into: 1. 26/7/1872 Dyke, Moray 2. 25/1/1875 Ardrossan. Ayr Good luck Bill Mck.

You'll find detailed answers to questions about WorldConnect at <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/>. WorldConnect allows you to remove or change your GEDCOM at any time. RootsWeb promises never to merge your GEDCOM with those of others, charge you or others to access it, or burn it onto a CD and sell it for profit. WorldConnect provides you with the ability to restrict downloads of your GEDCOM either completely or to a specified number of generations. WorldConnect is free to everyone. You do not need to be a RootsWeb financial supporter to upload your GEDCOM to WorldConnect or to search the GEDCOMs that are resident on WorldConnect. Many free and shareware genealogy software applications exist that can generate a GEDCOM file. We listed many of these applications and where to find them in last week's RootsWeb Review at <ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/20000126.txt> WorldConnect provides you with a wide variety of options to restrict display of data on living individuals or to remove that data entirely from your GEDCOM. RootsWeb accepts GEDCOMs on removable media. Please feel free to send your GEDCOM to RootsWeb WorldConnect Project, 1001 Tower Way, #120, Bakersfield, CA 93309 on a floppy, ZIP disk, or CD. We will upload it for you and send you notification by e-mail of your account name and password (please allow two weeks). Thereafter, you can change the viewing options at any time by going to <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/> Uploading a GEDCOM is a simple five-minute process. To upload, go to http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igmuser.cgi>, choose an account name and password, provide a title for the GEDCOM and hit the BROWSE button under Upload Options to locate the GEDCOM on your hard disk. Once you have chosen a file to upload, the process proceeds automatically. There are many options relating to uploading a GEDCOM; however, the default settings are the best place to start. You can edit these settings at any time after the GEDCOM is uploaded. Our users have told us that WorldConnect has by far the fastest upload times and most reliable operation of any GEDCOM hosting facility on the Web. RootsWeb is open 24 hours per day. Upload your GEDCOM at night just before you go to bed. Even if your Web site is indexed to all of the major search engines, most users will not be able to find your ancestors and make a connection with you. If your GEDCOM is uploaded to WorldConnect, users will easily be able to find you. In addition, people will also be able to find your Web site, since you can link your GEDCOM to your Web site on WorldConnect. The largest GEDCOM on WorldConnect has about 250,000 names. There is no GEDCOM that we have found that is too large for WorldConnect. The smallest GEDCOM on WorldConnect has one name. Start small and resubmit your GEDCOM frequently as it grows. Even a GEDCOM that contains only your immediate family can provide a connection to other researchers. Every day that you delay in uploading your GEDCOM is a day that you may miss a vital piece of research or a connection with someone who can help you. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 3. Hi Carol, At this stage I cannot help however I will be looking into bits on the Rothesay P.O. when I am in Rothesay in May. I believe a relative of mine was postmaster in the 1880s or 1890s and will be checking him out so will see what is available. (Please however don't expect too much before June) Cheers Bill McKinlay
