Hello again, In my previous message I forgot to mention a more specialised website, for Mount Stuart, the fabulous Victorian Gothic home of the Marquesses of Bute. It is at www.mountstuart.com It has some pictures, but most of them seem to take a long time to load. The text might be of interest, though, Madeleine
Dot, The site www.isle-of-bute.com has a small picture gallery of views of Bute, although this might be one you know of already. The site also contains some general information about Bute, Madeleine In gloriously sunny Wales

A very quiet week, no new members, and only the one post from Martyn mid week. This "slump" seems to be normal at this time of the year - those in the northern hemisphere are busy out doing spring time tasks in the house or garden, while some of us in the southern hemisphere are belatedly cleaning the gutters (not guilty your honour - I did mine at Easter), and battening down the hatches as autumn progresses. Running a little late today, as its Sunday afternoon already :-( Welcome to "Benwick" who has joined recently, and welcome back to Dot Wells. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** It was interesting in the last two days to see that the latest "ILOVEYOU" and variants worm attack rated on all the news services - radio, TV and newspapers, with the correct advice about handling such events. Noticeably, while the experts ensured that their company was identified in the TV pictures, they stressed first the importance of not opening unsolicited attachments, and did not plug their own product but simply referred to purchasing a "recognised" antivirus product and keeping it up to date. ****** ****** ****** Having spent a few days analysing the output from the 1881 Census disks, which I downloaded at the local FHS some time ago, I was wondering about several single "grand-children" in my sample of extracts. From the unmarried state of the known children and the age of the grand-mother, it cannot be discounted that these are possibly late arrival children - makes for interesting research when one considers the generally accepted opposite action, which was to cover up an illegitimate birth of a grandchild by putting out that it was a late arrival child. There was an interesting post on this topic from Alec Cameron to the Lanark list which may be of interest - go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl enter the list name LANARK and use "Alec Cameron" as the search criteria - select the 6/5/2000 message. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Bute?read=356 Surname: McCurdy, MacKirdy ------------------------- Archie, I have found a reference to a King Muircheartach who was the King of Munster from 1086 to 1114. He supposedly granted our family the Isle of Bute by ancestral right. I am not sure if we are related to him or were just given the Isle out of the goodness of his heart, or because we had been there for quite some time. He shows up in Norse sagas as King Myrkjartan. I have been searching for further evidence of our relation, if any, to this king who happens to be a descendent of Brian Boru(ma). Now wouldn't that be interesting? Let me know if you have any information on this, whether it might be bogus. Thank You, Suzanne MacKirdy

Hi, Anyone have any information on Barmore and/or Barmore Butt around 1770-1800. In case this topic is of interest to someone else this is what I have collected on the topic so far: In 1796, John Lamont is listed as being of Barmore Butt. The Rent Rolls do not list John Lamont as he was not a direct tenant of the estate. During the 1780s until 1798, Barmore was tenanted by Archibald MacConechy and his name is the only name recorded in the rent rolls in connection to Barmore. However an inventory of farmhouses prepared in 1782, shows that the North Butt of Barmore was occupied by a John Lamont who was a sub-tenant of MacConechy. The inventory shows that Lamont possessed a dwelling house and byre made from stone and clay which was roofed by thatch. The dimensions were 40 feet by 8 feet wide and there was also a thatched barn at the north east end of the dwelling house. Cheers, Sharon Hawkins
Madeleine, There was obviously a huge amount of nostalgia among the emigrants from Scotland generally. I live in an area of New Zealand that was colonised principally by Scots and although much of the early survey work in the area was done by an Englishman J.T.Thomson, he was attached formerly to Marischal College in Aberdeen as well as Edinburgh University. As the colonisation of this part of the country was funded by the Free Church of Scotland, it is perhaps not surprising that there is a distinct Scottish bias. One Buteman who did however contribute to the spread of names was John Tiffin Stewart, born Rothesay 12.12.1827, graduated as a civil engineer Glasgow. He was involved in surveying on the Victorian goldfields before moving to Auckland NZ. He later became, in 1858, assistant surveyor in the native land purchase dept. of the provincial government. I believe that Rothesay Bay in Auckland was one of his namings. (As I have not been to either bay yet, I cannot give a comparison of their appearances.) One I am certain of however is yet another Mount Stewart, this one near the city of Palmerston North. It is a trig. station named not after himself but after Mountstuart, as the surrounding countryside reminded him of that place. (J.T. was my G. Grandfathers cousin and they corresponded regularly throughout the later part of the 1800s.) Bill McK in NZ
