Where and to whom was Angus married? Thanks David Legg

    1. Rothesay Minister?
    2. Donald & Kaye Johnston
    3. During my family research, I have "come across" a reference that Sir Richard BURTON was "of Rothesay". Further research amongst my family members, suggests that he was a Minister at Rothesay. His son John married at Canterbury Kent in 1829. I need to ascertain just what is correct for Sir? &/or Rev? Richard BURTON! Perhaps someone is able to check the Clergy lists in Rothesay, or have other lists which may show him as "Sir". Anyway, I would be very grateful for any assistance. Why? Contact me if you have any ideas and since DAVIE is not Davey/Davies/ etc perhaps a One Name Society could be initiated? I would be interested to hear views of other Listers. 1. James HOGARTH - Glasgow trade union leader (with family origins in Ayrshire and Bute)
    2. Martyn Taylor
    3. I have recentlylearned that James HOGARTH, a distant relative of mine, was a Glasgow trade union leader in (I think) the 1930s, and was sufficiently prominent by the time he died to receive obituary notices in the UK national press. Before moving to Glasgow the family was in North Bute and before that (pre-1840s) it was in West Kilbride, Ayrshire. I would be happy to share my information about this family, going back to the 18th century, and would be particularly interested to hear from anyone who can point me to further information about this James HOGARTH in particular. 1. Dykes
    2. Thanks for the welcome. Sorry I got the address of my first message wrong, the system is easy once you know how!! My grandmother's brother was Arthur Dykes and he lived in Rothesay around 1920. I believe he was a gardener and a member of the Rothesay Horticultural Society. He was born at Seaton Carew, Middlesbrough and the family moved to Boston Spa, Yks when he was quite young. In WW1 he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery - 4th Brigade - Highland Division. I would like to know if anyone knows of the family. I believe Arthur married and there were 2 daughters and a son. Irene

    3. Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Bute?read=376 Surname: LUSK, CAMERON, CUNNINGHAM, McKIRDY ------------------------- I have a Millport LUSK who may be relevant – my great grandmother. Dan CAMERON [B:1826, D:1908, M:3 Dec 1852 Millport] married Barbara LUSK [B:1830, D:1912]. Children: my grandmother Barbara CAMERON [B:1862, D:1941, M: c.1896] married John CUNNINGHAM [B:1849 Millport, D:1922 Millport] - baker. This was his second marriage; the first being to Mary STEWART who died in 1889. There were three children of that marriage. Siblings of Barbara CAMERON were Hugh CAMERON, John CAMERON, Agnes CAMERON, Dan CAMERON [M: ?, ch Dan, Janette], Alec CAMERON [M: Margaret CRAWFORD, ch Barbara, Margaret, Alec, Jenny], Archie CAMERON [M: ? STEWART, ch Jessie (M: Jack McKIRDY), Barbara (M: Ian KERR), Ian, Molly]. Children of John CUNNINGHAM and Barbara CAMERON were: my father John CUNNINGHAM [B:13 Jul 1898 Millport, D:27 Aug 1987 Canterbury, Kent, M: 1932] radio officer and BBC engineer. He married Mary CASSELS [B:26 Jan 1900 Brodick, D:14 Mar 1978 Ramsgate, Kent]. I, another John CUNNINGHAM [B: 9 Oct 1933], was their only child. My career was in the Royal Navy [1951-1987], but unfortunately I never reached NZ! My father’s siblings were Daniel CUNNINGHAM [B:1900 Millport, D:1978 Stirling, M: May THOMSON] – master baker, Alec CUNNINGHAM [B:1902 Millport, D:1979 Stirling, M: Jenny BARBOUR ch Cameron] – baker, Robert CUNNINGHAM [B:1905 Millport, D:1989 Millport, M: Agnes SHIELDS [B:1911 Millport, D:1994 Millport] ch Sheila, John] – baker, joiner. Many of the above names and dates came from my father and haven’t been checked against other sources. I don’t yet know where Barbara LUSK came from but there’s a good chance that she provided the LUSK presence in Millport that drew Marion to retire there. I’m new to this genealogy game but hope this is understandable and of interest. John

Trying to recollect long-ago chats with my grandmother I think they lived at Piperhall and that there were ‘below stairs’ links with the big house, Mountstuart. Amongst their children was my grandmother, Euphemia BELL [B:1879 Kingarth, D:1975 Rothesay]. She married John CASSELS [B:18** Black Isle, D:1943 Millport], a policeman in Brodick, Arran and then the police sergeant in Millport. They had six children, the eldest of which was my mother Mary CASSELS [B:26 Jan 1900 Brodick, D:14 Mar 1978 Ramsgate, Kent]. In 1932 she married my father John CUNNINGHAM [B:13 Jul 1898 Millport, Cumbrae D:27 Aug 1987 Canterbury, Kent]. He was a seagoing Marconi Company radio officer [1916-1936] and then a BBC engineer [1936-1961]. I (another John CUNNINGHAM) was their only child [B:9 Oct 1933, Millport] and on 12 Oct 1963 married Margaret Dunn Fleming GOODWIN [B:29 Oct 1936 Glasgow]. I was a weapons engineer in the Royal Navy [1951-1988], but unfortunately never visited NZ! We have two children: yet another John CUNNINGHAM and Christine Airlie CUNNINGHAM. The other children of John CASSELS and Euphemia BELL were Bill [1902-1965] - policeman, Duncan [190*-c.1980] – merchant seaman, John [190*-c.1935], Colin [191*-1976] – hardware store, Anne [1918-1991] – nursing matron. I have limited information on their marriages, careers and children. The dates mainly came from my father and are approximate. I’m new to this genealogy game but hope this is understandable and of interest. John

Siblings: James CUNNINGHAM (children Jessie, Jean, Robert, John), Robert CUNNINGHAM (children Mary, Robert, Jean), Mary CUNNINGHAM, Jean CUNNINGHAM. First marriage to Mary STEWART [D:1889] Children: Thomas CUNNINGHAM (M: Alice LITTLE ch James, John), John CUNNINGHAM, James CUNNINGHAM (M: Wilhelmina GILKERSON ch John [Jack]). Second marriage to Barbara CAMERON [B:1862, D:1941]. I (another John CUNNINGHAM) was their only child [B:9 Oct 1933, Millport] and on 12 Oct 1963 married Margaret Dunn Fleming GOODWIN [B:29 Oct 1936 Glasgow]. I was a weapons engineer in the Royal Navy [1951-1988]. We have two children: yet another John CUNNINGHAM and Christine Airlie CUNNINGHAM. My parents were at school in Millport with several of the ROBERTSONs of Portrye – a farm in the north of Cumbrae. In the 1930s depression that generation moved to the south of England to lease and run farms in Kent and the New Forest. I visited them in about 1942 at Clobb, near Beaulieu. In 1959, when I was at Chatham, I re-established contact with the five ROBERTSONs who were farming in East Kent: Robert, Alec, John, Betty and Gordon. Only Gordon survives, living in Birchington, Kent. Much of the above information came from my father and hasn’t been checked against other sources. I wonder if the GILKERSON in the above list is a misspelling by my father of GILKISON? The ship name ‘Iolaire’ rings a faint but tantalisingly elusive bell – unfortunately there’s nobody left that I can check with. I’m new to this genealogy game but hope this is understandable and of interest. John
