    3. Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Bute/411 Surname: McCurdy, Murray, McBride, Warner, Laughlin, Guthrie ------------------------- On chart one in "The Ancestral McCurdys", p. vii, Blanchard lists the refugee brothers, sons of Daniel, b. 1622, as: Petheric (of the "Cairn"), b. 1640 David William, unmar. John, went to America Daniel They sailed according to Blanchard (pp. 30-31) on a "bitterly cold day in the latter part of November 1666." to the Island of Rathlin, and the next day to the mainland of Ireland near Ballintoy. On page 40 he states: John McCurdy, "the Refugee," the fourth of the brothers, was born about 1646. He moved as a young man to America. There is no further trace of him or of any possible descendants. There is nothing definitely to indicate or point to the likelihood that he left any posterity. I suspect John Turk McCurdy is not Petheric of the Cairn's brother. He may be his grandson. On chart five, Blanchard lists: James McCurdy (eldest son of Petheric), b. 1668. m. Jerusha Murray | John, b. 1691; d. 1789. m. Lucretia McCurdy | 1. Archibald, m. Jennet Guthrie 2. John, went to America. m. Lizzie McBride 3. Daniel m. Sally Warner Per chart four, Lucretia McCurdy was a cousin of John's. Her line is: Daniel McCurdy (youngest son of Petheric) b. 1677, d. 1747. m. Margaret Laughlin | Patrick b. 1700, d. 1798 m. Mary Laughlin | "Aunt" Lucretia b. 1727, d. 1810 m. John, son of James and Jerusha. Reference: "The Ancestral McCurdys" by H. 1. Bannatyne and MacIntosh
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. A couple of longshot enquiries that someone may have information on. In a letter my G Grandfather, Arch. McKinlay wrote to his cousin J.T. Stewart in 1894 he lists names and addresses of relations that the latter should look up on a return visit home from New Zealand. One was James MacIntosh living in Argyle Terrace. (No further info available.) The other was Mrs Bannatyne, wife of Revd. (W?) Bannatyne. Her brother was John and father was the late provost Jamieson [probably Neil]. The address is given as near "Mineral Well" East Bay Rothesay. I would be interested to here from anyone researching these families as I have failed to find any connections between these names and either the McKinlays or Stewarts. Cheers Bill McKinlay

You might want to inform your list members that somewhere in RootsWeb there is a virus list - If anyone wants to get this type of notice they can signup. ===== ===== ===== Several subscribers pointed out that with MS Outlook Express it is possible with private mail to get attacked by worms that use self executing html codes. Most Virus programs have e-mail options to avoid this type of event. I also understand that there is a patch available on the Microsoft site to fix the problem. Again I stress that you can't get these through list mail, as RootsWeb either bounces mail with html or translates it to plain text. ****** ****** ****** It will be two years this week since Chester Cowan first started this list. 1. Dykes
    2. I'm still looking for information about the Dykes family and am repeating my earlier request in case there are new listers who can help. My grandmother's brother was Arthur Dykes and he lived in Rothesay around 1920. I believe he was a gardener and a member of the Rothesay Horticultural Society. He was born at Seaton Carew, Middlesbrough and the family moved to Boston Spa, Yks when he was quite young. In WW1 he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery - 4th Brigade - Highland Division. I would like to know if anyone knows of the family. I believe Arthur married and there were 2 daughters and a son. Irene Popkins

He settled in Londonderry. I have no information on his wife, but do know he had a son (from whom I descend) named James McCurdy, b 1690 in Ireland and who came to America about 1720. James settled in Salisbury Twp, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. James in turn fathered Robert McCurdy (b 1736 in Salisbury, Lancaster Co, Pa, M Anne Creighton b 1710 D 1790) Robert was an officer in the revolution(capt/Penna). Hope I've given enough info to get a bite. I want more on John Turk McCurdy and his son James!

I have no name for his wife, but do have a son James McCurdy (B 1690 in Ireland, went to America about 1720 settling in Salistury Twp, Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania) from whom I descend. I came across your response regarding Petheric of the Cairn. The date of his emigration to Ireland from Bute and the fact that he sailed "with brothers" and that Londonderry is mentioned in your info makes me ask: Do you know anything of John Turk McCurdy and perhaps, his wife? Any response would be greatly appreciated

    3. Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Bute/399 Surname: McCurdy, McKirdy, Cameron, Stewart ------------------------- "Cairn" is a place (farmstead?) at Ballintoy, County Antrim, Ireland. Petheric McKirdy (later Petheric McCurdy) also known as "Petheric of Cairn" b. 1640 (most likely on or near the Isle of Bute, Scotland) Son of Daniel, b. 1622. Grandson of Donald, b. 1598, and Peggy Cameron (who may have been a great-granddaughter of James IV of Scotland). Petheric married in the summer of 1667, Margaret Stewart, daughter of Charles Stewart of Ballintoy, Ireland, a direct descendant of King Robert II of Scotland (and several Sheriffs of Bute). Charles Stewart was the son of Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan and Grisel Stewart (d. of John Stewart, Sheriff of Bute). "Petheric" appears to be a variation of name "Patrick". Petheric escaped with brothers from Royalists in Scotland to Northern Ireland in November of 1666. Petheric was a Presbyterian, and he supported William of Orange against James II of England. About 25 years after moving to Ireland he fought at the Battle of Boyne. He is also said to have been at the siege of Londonderry, with his two sons, John and Daniel. His great-grandson, Alexander, is the head of the Nova Scotia, Canada, branch of the McCurdy family. References: "The Ancestral McCurdys" by H. 3. Welcome to G & E Hordijk and Peter Hunter who have joined this week, and welcome back to "SMrcus" If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** It seems we are about to have another period of hoax VIRUS WARNINGS. NB forwarding this type of message direct to the list is NOT the way to advise of possible Viruses on RootsWeb Lists. If you receive such postings, send a copy to the list owner at LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com For this list, you use ButeshireGenWeb in place of LISTNAME. The list owner (me in this case) then checks their sources, and advises the list in a straightforward unemotional way if there is cause for concern. Messages purporting to come from IBM or Microsoft are almost certainly hoaxes - neither of these companies use broadcast e-mail for this purpose. The "virus" if you like is the unwanted propagation of the message to all and sundry in an emotive way which causes unnecessary upset and concern. Remember you cannot get a virus from a RootsWeb list message, as RootsWeb strips off all attachments before forwarding the messages. Yes, some people get the Digest as a series of attachments, but these are all e-mail messages only. You can of course receive e-mails with attachments in your non list mail, and this is where you need to observe the Golden Rules for Virus Protection. These are: 1 DO NOT open unsolicited attachments. when in doubt, delete the e-mail, and write to the sender asking them to send again (if possible not as an attachment). 2 Invest in and install a recognised Anti Virus program. 3 Keep the package up to date - most program vendors offer an annual subscription and on-line update service. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 2. Peter Cook
    3. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Most of GENUKI is now back online at its real address http://www.genuki.org.uk/ but on a much smaller system so if it gets busy you may have to wait! I quote "our man on the spot", Phil Stringer: "I've now managed to recover nearly all the GENUKI files that are hosted here onto sentinel and am thus providing most of what we had before the incident. The bits that don't work are anything that requires cgi-scripts and database access. This includes the GENUKI gazetteer (nearby places links), the parish locater, 1891 census places and error reporting. These won't become available until the machine we normally use is back in commission. This loss of service is due to a serious break-in and theft of computer hardware at the University of Manchester on Thursday 17th August. It will be a "few days" before there is any clear indication of how long it will take to resume normal service." As the mirror copy of GENUKI hosted on the Oxon FHS site contained less of the pages than the temporary service now available from http://www.genuki.org.uk/, the mirror service from the Oxon FHS site has been discontinued.
