Welcome to Walter Galica who has joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Last evening, I chanced on a program on the "box" (on the Aussie national broadcaster ABC) entitled "Scotland the Brave" - 90 minutes of traditional music, song and dance performed at the Opera House in Sydney - including just one reference to Arran in the "Song of the Clyde". Begs the question were there any songs considered to be local to any of our three areas - Bute, Arran or the Cumbraes? Chapter 13 in volume 2 of the Book of Arran contains fifteen Gaelic songs of local origin (12 translated). Anyone know of any other sources? ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. I was going to welcome to June Blackhall who joined this week, but she left almost immediately without posting anything. Que sera sera. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** Finally found time to visit the old maps site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ I was initially puzzled by not finding a direct link under the B counties for BUTE, but on looking wider found the right entry at "ARGYLL & BUTE" in the A counties box. This links to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/index.htm which is effectively the 'A' places Index page - if you know the starting letter of your place name just add it as in the following examples : Brodick, Arran http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/indexB.htm Millport, Cumbrae http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/indexM.htm Rothesay, Bute http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/indexR.htm I liked the way the links from the place index opened a separate window, so that when finished with one area, it was easy to return to the index simply by closing the map window. Note also that some of the larger towns do not always appear centrally on the maps from these links - for both Millport and Rothesay, one needs to move to the next map South to display the centre of the town. I also found it useful to work out the grid : m n o p i j k l e f g h a b c d in order to move diagonally when following roads out of my places of interest, simply by changing the address line and clicking enter. The next thing was to work out the major grid. For ARGYLL & BUTE it appears to be 5 wide, so for Arran, Brodick which happens to be at the bottom right of a main page at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10argyl551/HTML/fs_55244001d.htm , the next south is ...55249001p, east is ...55245001a and south east is ...55250001m If you haven't tried this site, I recommend that you do, however keep an eye on the clock, as it can be addictive as one follows around the various places that ones ancestors lived ! ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. The 1837 Directory of Rothesay and Port Bannatyne lists a firm of fish curers - Baxter & Carwell, Port Bannatyne. If anyone knows anything more about this firm I would be glad to hear from them. My BAXTERs were all settled around Port Bannatyne and both Archibald b. 1783 and Duncan b.1797 were fishermen. I wonder if they were connected to the curers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mary H. in NZ
Janet SPENCE b. 1738 married Archibald BAXTER in 1762. Her parents were Robert SPENCE and Mary FROW, who were married at Rothesay on 6th April 1727. They had 6 children, Janet,James 1740, Hugh 1743, Mary 1744, Hugh 1747, Florence 1751. I think Mary FROW was born in Rothesay 1697 and her parents were John FROW and Isabel MCCONACHY, but have not so far traced Robert SPENCE's parents. Any information on connections would be much appreciated. Mary H. in NZ
Mary, I have these folks in my family tree also, Archibald Baxter, 1736, being my 4th great grandfather. Janet Spences' parents are Robert Spence and Mary Frow, which you have. For Robert's parents I have listed Ninian Spence and Christian McNeil, but no birth dates for them. This was taken from the listing of Robert Spence's birth record at the LDS....LDS Batch C115582. Unfortunately, I was able to get no further back as of yet. For Mary Frow, you have her parents already. The father John Frow, b. 1675 parents I have listed as John Frow and Agnes Ronald, no birth dates, but marriage date of 21 Nov 1674 in Kilsyth, Stirling, Scotland. They all are the end points for the Baxter/Spence line that I have, but I have loads of stuff to the present. If you would like to have the information I have, personally email me and we can exchange the info. You can also glance at it at my web site at the family tree section. Eventually a Baxter girl (my g-grandmother) married a MacLennan. They had my grandmother (of course). Anyway, let me know and I'd love to exchange information with you. Take care. **************************************************************************** **************** Diane MacKenzie Personal Home Page - - "http://members.home.net/dianemackenzie/index.htm" Mirrored Site - "http://clik.to/dianemackenzie" Abbreviated Site -- "http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mackenzie/" MacKenzie Resource Center - "http://www.1freespace.com/mackenzie/" MacLennan Resource Center - "http://www.1freespace.com/maclennan/" Email - "dianemackenzie@home.com" OR "mackenzie@surnameweb.org" ----- Join the mailing list to receive posts when the web site is updated and post messages to others in the list...send an email in the subject heading to "dianemackenzie-subscribe@listbot.com". **************************************************************************** *****************

Welcome to Georgia Clements who has joined this week. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** This is a statement by GENUKI : - --------------------------- GENUKI has provided an information service for U.K. and Ireland genealogy on Internet free of charge for five years. It now has over 20,000 pages of information. Much of the web space is provided free on condition that GENUKI is not a commercial service. The home page is at www.genuki.org.uk. In April Les Strong from the Penrith area registered domain names www.genuki.co.uk and www.genuki.com. He also registered limited companies Genuki.com Ltd and Genuki Ltd, and started a commercial web site seeking paid advertising. These websites and companies were completely separate from GENUKI. Naturally GENUKI organisers and maintainers are furious that Les Strong started a commercial service using the name GENUKI. The organisers of GENUKI took formal domain name conflict resolution action. This led to a negotiated settlement. As a result the domains genuki.co.uk and genuki.com will be transferred to GENUKI - this should take effect on November 1st. But it cost money - which otherwise would have gone to providing more free information on Internet.
