What evidence do you have that she was born in Buteshire? Have you found her in another census? The marriage's entry saying she was of a parish in Buteshire only means she was living there at the time of her marriage not that she was born there. Is there any chance that the Thurtle name has come down orally and is actually Thirkell? Irene

    3. Hi, I am researching for a good friend of mine as I enjoy doing research for people. I have been unable to find any information on her G.G.grandmother who died in Kangaroo Flat, Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 1870. Unfortuantely she was married in the early half of 1853, so her wedding certificate is an early church one and only gives the partners, date and church. The only information I have is the following. FRANCES THURTLE JAMIESON Born 1827c Island of Bute, Scotland. Parents unknown. Not much to go on is it??????? I have tried the IGI's for Scotland and come up with nothing. I thought perhaps THURTLE may have been a surname along the line somewhere.( Not one on the IGI) If anyone has any information that may help, I would greatly appreciate it, as Liz & her husband Pat plan to travel to England & Ireland in 2002 and may visit the island is they can find out where Frances actually came from. Thank you in anticipation Eileen Sullivan, Kyabram, Victoria, Australia.

    1. Mount Stuart Trust
    2. Bill McKinlay
    3. Recently someone made enquiries about the records of the Mountstuart trust. The reply I had when I made enquiries is as follows; (dated 2.5.2000) From:Mount Stuart Trust <archives@mountstuart.com> "Our archives are currently closed to researchers during a period of reorganisation which will see the collection fully catalogued for the first time. We hope to be able to open to public access in the next couple of years (I’m afraid I can’t give a more precise date at present). We do possess a great many items relating to Bute including estate rental ledgers (from 1746) as well as various earlier items. The estate records are currently being sorted, arranged and catalogued and should be available for consultation when the archive opens to the public. In the meantime I would advise that you contact the Bute Museum in Stuart Street, Rothesay, who will be able to undertake research on your behalf for a small hourly fee. They will also have copies of the printed records of the parish of Rothesay from 1658 to 1750 which were published by the 4th Marquess of Bute in the 1930s. The originals of these parish records are held in the Argyll and Bute District Council Archives in Lochghilphead. The archivist there is Murdo MacDonald and he would be a very worthwhile contact. A further potential avenue for research would be the National Archives of Scotland who are based in HM General Register House, Princes Street, Edinburgh. I do hope that this has been of assistance. Yours sincerely, Andrew McLean Archivist"

    2. Lynn, Many thanks for posting the Kingarth OPR notes. I see that one of your interests is Mark MARSHALL CRAWFORD. You may already know this, but Mark MARSHALL was minister at Kingarth in the early 1800s, so it seems likely that your man was named after him. According to Bute and Arran Monumental Inscriptions pre 1851, edited by Alison Mitchell, the Rev Mark Marshall died in 1820, aged 42, and is buried at Kingarth. Thanks again for all the wonderful info to pore over, Madeleine
