    3. Hi: I am seeking ancestors/descendants of Robert McBride and Mary McFie who were married 22 November 1844 at North Bute. A grandson, John Ballantyne McBride, along with several siblings moved to Manitoba, Canada, before World War 1. Have been unable to find any information on ancestors of Robert or Mary. 2. Cathie Shelton
    3. Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right place to do this but as I am in Australia and sadly not going to be travelling to Scotland in the near future I want to find someone to do some research for me. Does anyone know of a good researcher who does research around the Rothesay area? I am looking for records of Rothesay Primary school for 1944 and any information about a Henry R Mcnab who lived at 39 Barone Rd in Rothesay in 1946. He was the informant on my Grandmothers cemetery record (No death certificate found) and I am hoping there may be a connection to our family. I don't know who my grandfather was and this is the only clue, I have found, so I can, hopefully, start my search with this line of the family. Thank you all. Cathie in Australia.

    1. ARDNAHO & CRAWFORD; HALL; MARTIN
    2. Lynn Prettyman
    3. Have tried to reach Bill MARTIN unsuccessfully, so I'm now throwing my query out to the list. In an e-mail he wrote to someone else and which she kindly forwarded to me, re: the above names, he states that "prior to John MARTIN taking over Ardnahoe, he was preceded by John CRAWFORD, who farmed there in the early part of the 1800's, then by Archibald HALL & John HALL who farmed from about 1840..." In doing my research, I had kind of thought Ardnahoe was a community, because I had found an Alexander MARTIN, there in 1735 and a James MARTIN in 1745, which is fully 100 years before the MARTINS in which I am interested. Am I to take it then, that it is actually a name for a farm, not a little community? Bill told this other person that his father's cousin still lives at Ardnahoe, so I do know that the place name is still an active name. Is there a website where I might find out more about Ardnahoe? Thanks, Lynn in Baltimore, MD, USA marylindsay1@home.com

    1. CENSUS TAKERS
    2. Hi all and a belated Happy New Year, I had the pleasure of participating in the 2000 Census, I know now how difficult it is for people to find their families. The census taker spelled my name wrong and even after spelling it 3 times he nearly copied it wrong, I offered to write it for him but he protected the form like it was his first born.<BG> Also this is this first time in my almost 50 years that my family was ever asked to partake in the census, just think the trouble my future relatives might have with a 50 year time gap. <VBG> Surname for my family in my search has been Spelled in these various ways on documents I have, SCULLION, SCALLON, SCALLAN, SCALLEN, AND IN THE 1891 Census was spelled SCHOLAN. IT'S KNOW WONDER WE HAVE TROUBLE. 1. James MARTIN/Jean CRAWFORD, Kingarth, Bute
    2. Lynn Prettyman
    3. Hello, Charles, Bill and list, Betty KENNY in Australia provided me with your names after she and I discovered we have a common link to this family. My connection is Helen MARTIN, b 11 Feb 1821, who married Archibald HALL on 9 June 1844 in Kingarth. Their dtr, Jane CRAWFORD HALL became my great-uncle's M-in-law when her dtr, Helen MARTIN MCNAIR, married David BAIRD LINDSAY, my ggm's brother. Jane CRAWFORD HALL's spouse was John McNAIR, born in Rye, County Donegal, Ireland s/o Alexander McNAIR and Nancy STEVENSON. John and Jane apparently met and were married in Victoria, Australia, to which place Jane's brother had already emigrated. His name was John CRAWFORD MARTIN, and he is Betty's grandfather. True, it is only a collateral relationship, but Helen McNAIR had a cousin, Jane HALL CRAWFORD, d/o Mark MARSHALL CRAWFORD & Jean HALL, who married Duncan McCUNN. Duncan and Jane's dtr, Catherine WILSON McCUNN married Helen and David's son, John McNAIR LINDSAY. By the most marvelous serendipity and very hard work, I have located John's two sons, Ian and David LINDSAY. They are my cousins because they are LINDSAYS, but they are also cousins to any one who shares the above mentioned folk. Ian is in Scotland and David emigrated to Tasmania. Are either of you, or anyone on the list, interested in this particular MARTIN/CRAWFORD family? Lynn in Baltimore, MD, USA marylindsay1@home.com

    1. Charles HALL & Bill MARTIN
    2. Lynn Prettyman
    3. Happy New Year, everyone! If the above two gentlemen are monitoring this list, I'd like to know how to reach either of you. Mrs. Betty KENNY has recently made me aware that we may be of help to each other. I am researching MARTIN and HALL in Kingarth and Rothesay, and it turns out that Betty's gf, John CRAWFORD MARTIN, is a sibling of one of my collaterals, one Helen MARTIN who married Archibald HALL 9 June 1844 in Kingarth. John and Helen's parents were James MARTIN and Jean CRAWFORD. So, Charles and Bill, if you are interested, (as well as anyone else who may be) I am interested in sharing my data on Helen MARTIN's line. She is connected to me thru her dtr, Jane CRAWFORD HALL who married an Irishman named John McNAIR in Australia. Their dtr was Helen MARTIN MCNAIR, who married David BAIRD LINDSAY in Lanark. Their grandsons are my cousins. Lynn in Baltimore, MD USA marylindsay1@home.com

    3. Hi Irene, I am sorry that I left out the fact that Frances Thurtle Jamieson came to South Australia in 1851c. and Victoria in 1853c. She married at St James Church in Melbourne in 1853. This is all according to her death certificate. It also said that she was born on the Island of Bute, Scotland. One of her grand daughters has the christian name of Thurtle. Certainly not a common name. Thanking you for your interest, Eileen .
