There have been a considerable number of families of Buteshire that have anglicised their surnames, especially between the mid 1700s and the early 1800s. Examples are McGilcherran to Sharp and McConnechy to Duncan. I wonder if anyone knows why this was done in the first place and secondly, how the new names were chosen. It must have been more than to distinguish different branches of larger families??? Bill

Hi folks I am going to Rothesay tomorrow for the weekend. It is the Wales/Scotland rugby match in Edinburgh on Saturday and the Pentyrch team are coming up to Rothesay from Wales ....... they watch the match in the pub! Rugby leaves me cold so I think I might pop into the library and see what they have in the way of local records. If anyone has a look up which would take 5 minutes!!!! send me it now. (I leave in 15 hours) ............ for example, an OPR date including day month year from the IGI, a census entry with reference number that just needs checked, anything else that is fairly simple. I'm not prepared to trawl through a film for anyone. I don't actually know what the local studies department in the library has. Irene
Bill, Thank you for posting the 1851 Census of Rothesay. I was able to pull information on the Baxter's from it. Again, thanks. The attached message that I attempted to send directly to Cheryl, following up some correspondence through the list, has been returned with the mysterious message (mysterious to me anyway) "The pipe has been ended". Cheryl, perhaps this will reach you through the List instead. (Apologies to everybody else for briefly taking up your time.) Martyn ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS Cheryl Get back to me by the weekend if you would like confirmation of what I told you previously and fuller details. I live in the south of England but have a flat in Edinburgh that I shall next be visiting then (something to do with Scotland v Wales on the Rugby field!). I tend to keep my Scottish maps up there. Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Bute/500 Surname: McPherson, McDougall, McFie ------------------------- I have an ancestor that was John McPherson born about 1793 in Rothesay, Bute who married Mary McFie born about 1794 in Rothesay. Their daughter, Marion born 15 May 1822 in Rothesay married John McDougall on 13 August 1848 in Rothesay. They immigrated to Australia with their children. The McPherson's farmed just outside Rothesay on "Gortnakellie".
Cheryl From my memory of a recent visit to Bute (but my maps are not conveniently to hand at present), Plan is the name of a farm near the south end of the island. THat would be totally consistent with the other information that you give. Bill While this is slightly off topic for the list, I guess it may also apply to others, so here goes to all... Taking the second point first, re fixing the long lines, in MSOutlook Explorer one would select: Options Send Set the Mail sending format to Plain Text Settings MIME and None Enter an appropriate number for auto wrap: 70 to 75 seems best OK OK As to your Word Table format problem, the only way I know is to convert the table to text using Comma as the separator, THEN save the file in text format. This creates an extra file, but leaves your Document with the Word Table unharmed. Open the text file in Notepad to cut and paste into your email message. You may need to add a note either above or below the data indicating that the comma separated data can be imported into either Word or Excel for formatting into a table. If its a really big file, the only thing to do is to arrange to send the word file (preferably zipped) off list as an attachment. regards Peter
Peter - Your advice if you wouldn't mind. I agree totally with posting to the group rather than individual replies. Heaps of useful information come that way but please tell me how to avoid information that I have in a MS word table becoming spread over about 40 pages!! Format gets demolished in plain text and makes it very difficult to follow. Secondly, I had a look back through archived material for the list the other day and discovered to my embarrassment that postings I had made in the past were all in lines a yard and a half long. they come through on the list OK so what settings do I need to alter to prevent this? Standardised "in", "at" etc. seems to be a most sensible approach. Cheers Bill McK.

G'day everyone Just been updating some records & found that I had some extra names listed on one of my entries for the 1881 census for Cumbrae. The main listing is for James FINNIE & his wife Mary FINNIE (prev SINCLAIR, b Kilmory, Bute) at Kirkton Farm, Cumbrae. Also shown as being at the Farm are: Ann SINCLAIR, rel. Servant, occ. Farm Servant, unmarried, 22, Kilmory, Bute; & John SINCLAIR, rel. Boarder, occ. Joiner, unmarried, 20, Kilmory, Bute. Hope this may be of some use to someone. Graeme Gold Coast Queensland Australia

"One of the joys of the lists is the way that you can pick up information you would never have dreamed existed - simply by being able to follow the conversations which pass between members. If replies go only to individuals, we actually lose much of the list's real value." ****** ****** ****** Obliquely continuing on the theme of what you can pick up from a list - one item that shouldn't be forwarded to the list is virus warnings. These should always be forwarded to the list maintainer in the first instance - if necessary, the message can be passed on to the list under a suitable title. Reason for the reminder - the "Budweiser frogs" hoax has resurfaced - for new members this hoax "virus warning" has been around since 1997. At the risk of boring the old hands, rules for anti virus protection: 1 invest in and use a reliable anti-virus package 2 keep it up to date (recommended minimum of monthly updates) Check the list archives for more on this subject - go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Enter the name of the list - in this case ButeshireGenWeb-L, then follow the prompts at the next screen, you will have to choose a year. ****** ****** ****** While not universal standards, the following have been suggested as useful guides to some of the place name prefixes to entries in the Scottish OPR's ... Hi all. I have quite a bit of info for those who requested lookups for the 1851 census. I'll reply off list as it is easier to give formatted material that way. As my nearest Family History Centre is about 4 hours drive away, it takes a bit of organising to get there so it may be a fortnight or so before I can complete work. Bill

Dear Bill Well, you're a dream come true. This will test you and I won't be surprised if you can't help me. But here goes: Agnes Allan Lauder Laidlaw married David Eaglesham in Rothesay in 1907. He was from Ayr but she was a local, born c1882. Her Mum was Agnes Clunes. That's it. All the info I have. Are there any Laidlaws in Bute. Is it a Bute type name? I've seen Clunes written as Cluness. Good Luck to you and hence to me.
