Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/Scotland/Bute/10497 Surname: Colquhoun, Brackenridge, coote, wark, Breckenridge ------------------------- I am looking for the parents or parent of Catherine Wallace Colquhoun last known address Rothesay, Isle of Bute married to William Breckenridge in the late 1800's
Hello All, A couple of questions... I have a chaps two young daughters in an 1851 census described as "shaw turners" by occupation. I'm just guessing that this probably had something to do with cloth making etc. but does anyone know for sure what this occupation was? If a man living in Lamlash, Kilbride Parish, Arran was described from 1851 onwards as a coal merchant/coal agent wouldn't he have to have the coal all brought over from Ayrshire? Does anyone know where in Ayrshire the coal was usually imported from for use in Arran? Thanks a lot. Pat
Hello Everyone, I haven't posted for a while but I'm still out here freezing in Ontario, Canada. Hope you're all well. Has anyone been researching the NICOL/NICOLL/NICKEL/McNICOL surname in Buteshire and particularily any branch living in Arran? I wondered if someone would have any clues relating to my new information. I just received the OPR extract for the marriage of my 4X great grandparents, Thomas McNISH/McNEISH and Jane "Jean" NICOL/NICOLL. I knew I wouldn't get the names of their parents from the OPR but I wanted the parishes to which they'd each belonged at the time of their marriage in Paisley, Renfrewshire in 1790. At the very least, their eldest son, Alexander McNISH/McNEISH, and his family lived in Lamlash, Kilbride, Arran from sometime before 1841 but, I've long had the notion that the family connection with Bute began before that even and, my gosh, I wasn't far off the mark on that hunch. The marriage/banns record of 12 June, 1790 Paisley, High Church Parish, Renfrew states: "Thomas McNISH, weaver, in the High Church Parish and Jean NICOLL in Kilbride Parish in Arran" So, Jane "Jean" NICOL/NICOLL came from Kilbride in Arran but the burning question now is where does she fit in with the others by that surname who were known to be in Buteshire and on Arran at the time? Can anyone help? Kind Regards, Pat http://www.mccabeclan.com/mcneish.htm

I am looking for information tying Robert to Mackemies & Jamiesons of Bute, especially Sir James Stewart, Sherrif of Bute. Thanks Robert (Steve) McKamey
As far as I am aware, the only source for the next census to be released (currently 1901) is the PRO in London. The 1901 census for England and Wales will be available next year. It is going to on the web for a fee. I believe the 1901 census for Scotland has been out for a long time and is available at the Scottish Record Office in Edinburgh. /cheers Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Cook" <cookfmly@bigpond.com> To: <ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2001 12:31 PM Subject: Re: 1901 Census availability > As far as I am aware, the only source for the next census to be > released (currently 1901) is the PRO in London. > > Peter > > -----Original Message----- > From: Ian Murray <ian.murray@tesco.net> > To: ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com <ButeshireGenWeb-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Tuesday, 27 February 2001 23:28 > Subject: Re: Sunday morning musings #92 - delayed due RootsWeb > down-time charset="iso-8859-1" > > > Hi all, > > On 25 Feb 2001, at 19:27, Peter Cook wrote: > > > 1901 is due for release on 2 Jan 2001, after which the 1911 will be > > accessible for confirmation only of a specific person at specific > > address (for a fee). It will become available at the same time as the rest of the UK. Twenty years ago Scotland had only an 80 year closure on census but that was abandoned some time ago and it's now the same as the rest. Irene
Firstly the "I'm sorrys" Peter, sorry I caused a hassle by posting too much at once. Pat, the "Ens" were my abreviation for enumeration numbers, didn't mean to confuse. Next, there were quite a few misses with the look-ups requested. I was unable to find MCVEAN, MENEELY, GILKERSON, LEES, CLUNES, ROSLYN COTTAGE and several others either because I missed them or eventually ran out of time. Please understand that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence - just cos I didn't find them doesn't mean they weren't there. I've had to return the film so I won't be able to do more regrettably as I was rather enjoying the transcribing. Following is the final bunch of collections. Hi I hope everyone else has discovered www.isleofbute.com and I do apologize if I missed some dashes or full stops in the website name. They have a bulletin board of genealogical queries and various offerings about Rothesay and the island in 2001. The snow scenes currently showing are beautiful, but verra cold. For a laugh, look at the property pages. House prices are way below the averages of the rest of Britain. /cheers Pat

As I haven't heard anything about it on this and other groups, I assumed that it wasn't available yet. Messages are starting to flow again, so welcome to Carole Foster who has joined this week. ****** ****** ****** As it seems to be the time when people are asking about the dates of the census, I dragged this up from my e-mail archive ... "Each census was taken based on all persons resident at midnight Sunday / Monday night, so you will see lists which includes variations on the full list below ... 1841 - Sunday/Monday - 6th/7th June 1851 - Sunday/Monday - 30th/31st March 1861 - Sunday/Monday - 7th/8th April 1871 - Sunday/Monday - 2nd/3rd April 1881 - Sunday/Monday - 3rd/4th April 1891 - Sunday/Monday - 5th/6th April 1901 - Sunday/Monday - 31st March/1st April 1911 - Sunday/Monday - 2nd/3rd April 1901 is due for release on 2 Jan 2001, after which the 1911 will be accessible for confirmation only of a specific person at specific address (for a fee). Up to that date the same facility applies to the 1901 census." To understand the answer as to why the census time was set for midnight on the Sunday - Monday, one has to remember that the first census of the ten year cycle was taken back in 1801. This fact is often overlooked as the first four are not of much use to genealogists. At that time, the power of the church was much greater than it is now. Further, with the Industrial Revolution just getting into gear, the population was still to a great extent involved in agricultural pursuits, and less mobile as the railways were, at the time the census cycle began, i.e. the turn of the 19th C, still in the future. Thus with the religious restrictions on outside work on the Sabbath, this time slot was chosen by the government of the day in 1800, as it gave the best chance of the population being "relatively" stationary. The choice of day also would have allowed for a reminder from the pulpit, coupled to a reminder that the Enumerator's would be round to collect the forms/details starting the next morning. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. Hi all, I've posted all the records I have transcribed to date but I will be having another session of it tomorrow. (Unfortunately work sometimes gets in the way of more important matters so I'm sorry if I haven't kept some of you up to date.!!!) Cheers Bill
Hi List Where would you find people who were Aboard Ship on Census night 1851? My GGrandfather, James DAVIE, was listed as a Seaman, residing in Rothesay on his Marriage record of 25 September 1851. I didn't see him or "my" TAYLOR family of Rothesay, listed on the Census information that Bill posted. That is, Captain Daniel TAYLOR, Master Mariner, age 56, wife Barbara (MS BARR) and children, who would have been in their 20's. Thanks for any information. Hi Lynn As this maybe of use to others, I'm sending the answer to the list, it should beat the downtime ! First you need to be running Viewer 3 - I got mine (Version 3.02) from the Sydney LDS Mail Order office for A$10 +p&p - it is also available from Salt Lake City (US) and Birmingham (UK) for about the equivalent in US$ or GBP respectively. Ok, method: 1 Start Viewer 3 2 insert the Census Area Disk which covers the address you have. For "The Plan, Bute" example I used Scotland Highlands 3 when the standard enquiry form appears, select "Cancel" 4 click on "Search" 5 select "Neighbours - Advanced Query ..." 6 enter your keywords {read the Help screen first if you want to use OR, NOT, etc.} For "The Plan, Bute" example below I simply entered two keywords: plan bute lower case is fine - the space is interpreted as "and" - by chance this quickly gave just one hit - as sent to the list. I also used this method to quickly find where William Boag & Elizabeth were, this time by using three key words: william boag elizabeth - again by pure luck I had one hit, although the search took a little longer - result as sent to the list the second time. If I had had zero hits, then I would probably have tried: wi* boag eli* if still zero, I would have changed the area - but that another and more complicated story. To see the neighbours simply go to "View" and turn off "Matches - Advanced Query" - or use the short cut toggle: Shift & F9. Further searches can be done with or without the display of Neighbours by use of this toggle. regards Peter -----Original Message----- From: Lynn Prettyman <marylindsay1@home.com> To: Peter Cook <cookfmly@bigpond.com> Date: Wednesday, 21 February 2001 21:48 Subject: Re: Census- How did you do that? >Pete, I would like to know how to do what you just did.
