    3. Dee I asked a similar question a year or so ago, in relation to my g.g. grandfather, Peter TAYLOR, who was described as a quarryman when he died in Rothesay in 1861. The consensus, as I recall it, was that there were several quarries where he might have worked but that there was no way of pinning down one in particular. Would be interested to know if you hear differently. This census has been filmed by the LDS and is available for hire through their family history centres. Irene

Having said that in the published book of MIs for Rothesay there are no Lyons ........ several Lyon but no Robert or Barbara .......... in any case Barbara would be buried under her maiden name. 3. Hi Everyone I am new to the list and only began researching my family tree in November last year, I put the cart before the horse so to speak when I posted my interest in the LIVINGSTONE, McIVER, CAMPBELL and EARLY names before I introduced myself. I live in Morayshire Scotland. I am recovering from illness which confined me to the house for the last two years, Researching my family tree has given me an interest and kept me busy well into the wee small hours when I am unable to sleep. The above names I have traced back to Rothesay 1845. so far most of the men have been Fishermen, Quarrymen, Stonemasons or general labourers. I was told that the family at one time owned the fishing rights for Bute. Can anyone tell me what this actually means and how I can find out information on this or where I might find information relating to my family employed in these trades? Some of the other names I am researching are Revie, Rafferty, Black, Brown, White, Lyle, Argyll and Lanarkshire Regards, Jane

I have no more information about Elizabeth's parents or their ancestors. Any further information that you have about them would be appreciated. I would be hapy to answer any questions you may have about the Bannatynes, but am not descended from any of the Bannatynes who married Sillars. (Although there are still some Bannatyne/Sillar descendants on Arran.) Thanks Peter

    3. Welcome to Bill Dunn, "Saltire1", Kay & Bill, Jim Ludwigsen, Audrey Coulter, Jane Price and "colquhoun" who have joined this week. Welcome back to John Beith who rejoins after a change of ISP, and to Mary Hamilton who has also rejoined after a short break. If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon. ****** ****** ****** There has been an addition to the List of Buteshire Researchers Home Pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctbutes/homepage.htm this week - under Kilmory, Arran. The newly linked site has some interesting photos and a map extract for part of the Feorline area of Arran. Long time list members will recognise the subject matter on the History of Arran page of the site, which appeared here over 4 weeks in late 1999. The copyright now resides with Alice as publisher of the Web site, this is entirely appropriate - it should be with a descendent of the original author. ****** ****** ****** In his post earlier this week, Bill McKinley queried whether the "letter home" which was the subject of his e-mail might be "off topic" - definitely not. As Bill himself said "It contains quite a few names that may just tie in with others families" - other Rothesay ie Bute families. It also gives others whose ancestors were not named, but also emigrated from Bute to Australia, an idea of conditions not only in Australia, but also by comparison in Bute. I'm glad to see that Bill has since posted "another letter home". I think we can all relate to his sentiments in the introduction re the attitudes of our forebears to leaving items for posterity. Begs the question - How much would have left if they had known then, that we would be digging around now ? Thanks also to everyone who helped Bill out with his M L enquiry - that's what being on these list is all about. ****** ****** ****** Feel free to join in and present your own items. 3. Dear List Members: I am attempting to learn if anyone knows where I may locate the muster rolls for the men who fought at the Battle of Worcester, 03 September 1651. My ancestor was John Colquhoun and this is all I have on this man. The New York City Library mentioned he was from Edinburgh. Your reply shall be appreciated and I remain, Respectfully, Chester H. Posted on: Buteshire Scotland Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Scotland/Bute/10502 Surname: McDuffie, Kerr ------------------------- I have a Daniel MCDUFFIE (1750 - 1828) who married Mary Margaret KERR (1760 - 1834), daughter of Daniel KERR and Catherine MCDUFFIE, both of Arran. I have been told that both Daniel MCDUFFIE and Mary Margaret KERR were born on Arran; however I have not been able to find evidence to substantiate this. I believe that both the MCDUFFIEs and KERRs migrated from the Isle of Arran to Bladen County, North Carolina, USA in the early 1700s. Could my KERRs be somehow connected to Alexander and his daughter, Christine?
