There was a Agnes Farmer aged 34 in Rothesay in book T15 page 17 a Henry Farmer aged 12 in Kilmory (Arran) book 04 page 11 and then an Agnes Glover aged 52 and next to her a Jean Farmer aged 25 (neither of them were born in Buteshire) in Rothesay on book T15 page 16. The fiche does not delineate households ...... you need to look at the original entries. But it may be your John Farmer was dead by 1851 and William was somewhere else. There is no MI for Farmer in the Buteshire MIs book. Irene

    1. Farmer Surname at Roth(e)say.
    2. Steve Farmer
    3. Hello all, I am researching the Farmer surname and have traced back to a William & Christina Farmer who arrived in Australia on the ship "Nabob" in 1855. Christinas' maiden name is Dunn and her parents William and Jeanette were onboard as well. His occupation is listed as miner and "Native Place and County" as Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Her "Native Place and County" is listed as St Georges, Lanarkshire. They also brought their son William aged 1 and his "Native Place and County" is listed as St Georges, Lanarkshire as well. Hiss parents are listed as John and Agnes, residing in Rothsay, Isle of Bute. Also if anyone has any info regarding Farmers in Roth(e)say or Blantyre I would be very interested. 3. Hi Graham You opened ... >A couple of comments on your lists of last week. I am replying via the mailing list, as the points you raise re the Strays list and on mail formats will be of interest to some if not all list members. Your comments below re recording of country only rather than full birthplace in the census, would I think be echoed by just about every genealogist/family historian on terra firma. I understand that the current UK 2001 census does not require this detail. :-( >It was unfortunate that each country did not mandate a >birthplace entry for those born elsewhere but I guess we >should be grateful for those who volunteered this >information and the enumerators who entered same. The >significance of this omission becomes apparent when >one looks at the census from Canada (for example) for >the same year and sees pages of entries reading simply >'Scotland', 'Ireland', 'England' when these make up 75% >of the entries. As to ... >I don't know whether you have the Bute strays in England and Wales >scanned but I am looking for all the 'Rothesay' entries for my >reference files (were there none for Kingarth or North Bute?). My search string comprises all parishes in 'Buteshire' - if there had been any 'North Bute' entries, these would have been caught by the generic 'Bute' part of the search. As to 'Rothesay' , I used "roth*s?y' for those, any advice on a better search string would be appreciated. You went on to say ... >You should be aware that there are a staggering 3 097 >(by my count) Bute strays within Scotland for 1881. Currently I have a total of over 3500 extractions, of which I have indexed just under 1400 so far. Of this indexed total, there are less than 30 which cannot be assigned to at least one of the three islands (counting the Cumbraes as one). Of this interim total 750+ are Arran, 390+ are Bute and the rest ~150 are Cumbrae. For the Bute Island count above, I am including 'Bute, Bute' entries. There are 30+ Kingarth entries and about 10 for North Bute. These low proportions versus the total also help to explain why there were no entries for these specific parishes in the England / Wales list, which after all had only 238 entries. Some apparently Arran entries for Kilmory and Kilbride parishes may in fact be for the places with the same name on Bute - in some cases the surname could determine the location. For this reason, I intend to release the Scottish part of the Bute Strays list split alphabetically on surname, irrespective of location. Because of the format, it should be possible for any reader to cut and paste the individual parts of the list into a .csv file, combine them then open it with Excel (or equivalent) and sort it anyway they like. In reference to your query on mail formats ... >I also wanted to ask you about the text printing on the list. >I was somewhat (read 'very') perturbed to see my work >printed out in a broadside format which is a complete >waste of the effort put into this. I presume here, that you are talking about your recent post re CRAWFORD & ARDNAHOE ? This is definitely a function of the mail program that you are using. If it does NOT physically terminate the lines on a word boundary after a preset number of characters, then it will appear as one continuous line in the list mail. RootsWeb does not alter the posted item in anyway format wise. >Keep up the good work; the Bute list is certainly among >the very best in terms of quality, content and cohesiveness >that I have seen. Thank you kindly Peter

    1. McKINLEY/MORRISON/WEIR 1800s, Rathlin Island
    2. Maryl
    3. Hi All - I am trying to find my ancestors (surnames McKINLEY, MORRISON, WEIR) roots in Scotland. They were living on Rathlin Island, Co Antrim, NI by 1803. I know that their roots were in Scotland and that they often traveled to Greenock to work in shipbuilding. Also, one was said to be head gardener at Holy Rood Palace in Edinburgh (maybe this was a story). I have wondered if perhaps they followed the route of the McCurdys and came from Bute about 1666. McCurdy was the most numerous name on Rathlin Island in the 1800s. When they lived on Rathlin, the families appear to have been Roman Catholic. Given names were Archibald, John, James, Alexander, Daniel, Patrick. Some Rathlin Islanders went to Australia, but mine came to the U.S. during 1851-1861. Regards, Maryl, USA

    1. Fullerton in 1851 census
    2. Hi everyone, Peter's musings about the strays in the 1881 census inspired me to search for people born Arran/Bute on the LDS Church's 1851 census CD for Devon, Norfolk and Warwickshire . I found just one family: Archebald FULLERTON, aged 41, a Boatman Coast Guard, born Kilbride, Arran, and his wife Margaret, 41, born Islay, were living at Trimingham, Erpingham, Norfolk, with children Alexander, Archebald and John (all born Kilbride, Arran) and Adam, James and Cheallottes (all born Norfolk). If anyone wants full details, please contact me off list. I'm also happy to search for a specific name if anyone thinks their Buteshire relatives might have strayed to any of these three counties. I should say, like Peter, that my search obviously didn't include people simply listed as born Scotland. As far as I know, these are the only three counties that have been indexed for the 1851 census and put on CD. Madeleine Wales

They both enlisted in the 'Royal 42nd Highland Regiment of Foot - 2nd Battallion in Glasgow on August 10th, 1775 with Lieutenant Colonel Sterling's Company. This entry was in the McKirdy Death Index for Bute, which we also have at the library & it lists witnesses & informants as separate entries, hence the confusion. I had another look today, in fact I have copies of all McKinlay & Martin entries. The above entry for Bryce could be as a witness. There is an entry for John McKinlay of 137 S Cumberland St, Glasgw, son of James McKinlay in 1864, probably as a witness & 2 entries for Janet McKinlay of 38 St. Georges Rd, Glasgow, one as sister of James McKinlay & the other as spouse of ? Martin, Parish Rothesay, entry 0207 1871 Lds Film No.0224611 "Also found an entry in a Glasgow Directory for John MARTIN, Cabinet & Chair Maker, Tower Lane Glasgow, will have to check this for the date, also. Did not have time to check all the Directories for this entry today. It was not in Slaters Directory of Glasgow & it means going through the Glasgow Directories year by year. Did find several entries for Bryce Martin, his businesses & houses, which I will forward direct. I see on the IGI a marriage between Bryce MARTIN & Janet MACKINLAY in Rothesay in 1853.." This one is definitely "mine" or at least the Martin/Mackinlay > marriage is. 3. Hi Betty, Thanks for the interesting bits "We found an entry on the Kingarth PR's for Bryce Martin , Glasgow, son-in-law of John MCKINLAY, Rothesay, 1860, think it was a burial." The Bryce Martin I am after certainly was the son-in-law of John McKinlay but was alive and kicking in 1894. (Just to make life confusing, there were at least 5 John M's around Rothesay at the time but it is certainly a co-incidence.) "Also found an entry in a Glasgow Directory for John MARTIN, Cabinet & Chair Maker, Tower Lane Glasgow, will have to check this for the date, also. I see on the IGI a marriage between Bryce MARTIN & Janet MACKINLAY in Rothesay in 1853.." This one is definitely "mine" or at least the Martin/Mackinlay marriage is. The address of John Martin doesn't tie in with that on the one surviving invoice of the business that I have seen (unable to locate at the moment.) Would you happen to have a name of the trade directories as I would like to see if there is anything else? I think it high time I tried to locate a death cert. to see if I can ger better leads on this one. Cheers for now Bill

    3. Hello Bill, JAMES & BRYCE are certainly family names. James MARTIN & Jean CRAWFORD had a son, Bryce born 11 Jan 1810. Also found a burial for a Bryce about 50 years, farm labourer in 1860. Also: James to Archibald MARTIN & MARGARET JAMIESON 21 Aug 1825 James to Bryce MARTIN & Jean MCDOUGALL 28 Dec 1834 The latter James could be the son of Bryce, born 1810. Our John was not baptized as John Crawford Martin, but this was the name he used on marriage certificate,etc.. We found an entry on the Kingarth PR's for Bryce Martin , Glasgow, son-in-law of John MCKINLAY, Rothesay, 1860, think it was a burial. There is also a burial for Catherine,{no age}daughter of James MCKINLAY in 1869. We have these Parish Records permanently at our FH Library and as it is a while since I transcribed these entries, would need to recheck them. If there is anything else you would like checked, please let me know. Also found an entry in a Glasgow Directory for John MARTIN, Cabinet & Chair Maker, Tower Lane Glasgow, will have to check this for the date, also. I see on the IGI a marriage between Bryce MARTIN & Janet MACKINLAY in Rothesay in 1853, which seems to have been entered by a relative. Sorry this is so vague, but hope it helps, Betty

    3. Martyn to the best of my knowledge I don't think so. If there is a link it is a rather obscure one. (I have a McKinlay/McKinlay marriage which took place in South Africa in 1880 before they returned to Rothesay but it is one of my dead ends that I just wind up with either insufficient information or too much conflicting information to pursue with confidence.) At this stage I have no known McKinlay family still in Bute after 1894. Cheers Bill.
